Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy looped socketed hammer dating to the late Bronze Age, c. 1600-800 BC. The hammer is broadly rectangular in plan, but does taper slightly from the socketed end to the tip. In profile the tapering is more evident. In section it is square. The socketed end has a raised but flat collar. The socket is sub-square in shape with rounded internal corners. A fragment of the collar is broken and missing. The tip of the hammer is rounded and assymetrical. There is a D-shaped loop on one side with an oval hole. A casting seam is evident o…

A thumb nail scraper of Early Bronze Age date, c. 2350-1600 BC. The flint is buff in colour and translucent. It is a secondary flake with a small area of white cortex remaining on one edge. It appears that further cortex was removed along this edge during retouch. In plan the scraper is vaguely rectangular but with one long curved edge (approximately 1/3 of the total edge) at the proximal end. There is a previous flake removal scar on the dorsal surface and a low bulb of percussion on the ventral surface. Along the curved edge there is invasive, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch. …

A cast copper alloy slender Middle Bronze Age looped palstave, probably dating from c. 1500- 1150 BC. The cutting edge has a pronounced crescentic form with the tips re-curving back onto the expanding form of the blade though one sides curve is more pronounced than the other. There is slight damage to the cutting edge. The tops of the flanges on both sides are tall and the same height as the stop ridge down to the blade section in a leaf pattern. The septum is flat with a H shape and a casting pit in one side against the stop ridge. The casting lines …

A near complete cast copper alloy decorated flat axehead probably of Needham’s Class 3, possibly type b (Boreland) c. 2200-1900 BC. The axe is broken mid-blade with none of the butt remaining, making further diagnostics unobtainable. There are two grooves running down the centre of the blade on one side which thicken and flare before terminating before the blades edge. Measurements: Length 87.1mm, Width 88.7mm at blade, tapering to 40.6mm at break, Thickness 11mm at break, tapering to 3.9mm at cutting edge, Weight 277g.

A cast copper-alloy Bronze Age probable spearhead tip fragment, or possibly an arrowhead fragment.  The fragment is sub triangular in plan, tapering towards the tip, the extreme end of which is missing.  The blade has a triangular centre ridge, being more pronounced on one side.  The edges of the blade are worn and the fragment is lightly corroded.  The triangular mid-rib suggests a date of 1500-1150 BC. Two fragments of a sword blade, or possibly a dirk or rapier, dating to the Middle to Late Bronze Age period, c. 1200 - 800 BC. The two fragments can be refitted, and the tapering width suggests they belong to the distal end of a blade. The larger fragment is wider and the edges taper gently towards the second fragment. The second smaller fragment is narrower and tapers further still towards the tip of the blade, which is missing. The blade has a lenticular shaped cross-section and a low, broad central ridge. A broken copper-alloy spearhead, Davis (2006, p.34) Type 3B: Flame Narrow blade, dating to the Acton Park to Taunton Industrial phase of the Middle Bronze Age c. 1500-1140 cal. BC (dating Needham et al. 1997). The spearhead is broken into three sections, most likely through post-depositional damage, but can be refitted to roughly illustrate its original form. The smallest section is the tip, which is blunt and severley pitted. A second section represents the upper half of the blade, and the third and largest section represents the base of the blade and the socket. T…

An incomplete, unlooped copper-alloy palstave axehead dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1500-1140 BC. The blade flares from the stop ridge forming an roughly convex cutting-edge, but it is uneven due to damage. The blade tapers from the stop ridge to the blade edge, creating a wedge-shaped, triangular profile. The blade length seems short in proportion to the butt length when compared to other palstaves. On both faces of the palstave, there are two depressions forming a central ridge, creating the shape of a shield. The stop ridge is wide…

An incomplete, heavily worn fragment of a cast Bronze Age copper-alloy palstave axehead, probably of Middle Bronze Age date c. 1600-900 cal BC. The fragment consists of the axe's blade above which is a worn and abraded termination. The axe fragment is broadly trapezoidal. The broken side runs transversely across its body giving a flat edge from which the sides thin evenly towards a slightly crescentic blade which is heavily chipped. In profile the body of the axe is triangular, due to tapering towards the cutting edge. The break reveals a rectangular cross-section. …

A corroded copper-alloy axehead fragment: probably the terminal of a Middle Bronze Age palstave (c. 1500-1100 BC). The cutting edge is shallowly rounded and somewhat abraded. The sides only barely perceptibly flare to this edge. The break, a shallow diagonal, appears old; the solid cross-section revealed suggests that this was a palstave. Such an identification is reinforced by the presence of a central casting seam visible on the side. No decoration appears to survive on the fragment, though the patina is pitted in a few places.
