A cast copper alloy post medieval double looped buckle probably dating to AD1650 - AD1700. It measures 23.14mm in length, 17.96mm at the widest point, 1.68mm in thickness and weighs 1.8g. The buckle is asymmetrical with one D shaped and one rectangular loop and is D shaped in cross section (flat on the underside). The D shaped loop is wider on the outside edge and thins at the pin bar, forming a crescent shape on the outer edge. This loop is 13.44mm in length, and 17.96mm wide, each measurement taken at the maximum point. The rectangular loop is slightly smaller than the D shaped one …

Fragment of a cast copper alloy probable buckle. The frame is chunky and oval in cross-section, and has a zoomorphic terminal consisting of an animal head with bulbous brow and upturned snout. The open jaws may hold a tiny stub of the missing bar. It is covered with mid to light green corrosion product. 23.17mm long, 4.68mm thick, weight 4.1g. Although this was originally identified as a late Roman buckle, its rounded cross-section means that it is in fact much more likely to be an 11th- or 12th-century buckle (or possibly swivel loop) similar to SWYOR-246C26.

Copper-alloy openwork spiked plate from a post-medieval buckle. The object consists of a trapezoidal flat frame with a short internal integral spike. The narrower end of the frame has two integral tubes forming a hinge, which would have rotated on the bar of the buckle frame. Length: 32.01mm, width: 20.85mm, weight: 4.73g. Compare an example from a complete rectangular buckle illustrated in Whitehead (2003) p. 101, no. 649, and dated there to c. 1690-1720.

An unusually large buckle frame dating to the medieval period. The frame is D-shaped with a narrowed pin bar. The wide outside edge is decorated with an engraved zig-zag forming triangles; those with their apexes towards the external edge are filled with faint rocker-arm engraving. There is iron corrosion adhering to the pin bar. Most unusually, the underside of both loop and bar are hollow, and so the buckle frame has a C-shaped cross-section. Even more strangely, it has three separate small copper-alloy rivet-like pegs which can just be seen polished flat on the upper face. There is…

A copper alloy dolphin buckle dating to the late Roman to early Medieval period (350-450 AD). The frame is open, flat and rectangular in section and is in the form of two stylised dolphins, balancing an egg or globe on their heads. The dolphins' eyes are rendered as moulded ring and dot motifs and they possess pairs of triangular crests on their backs. At the base of their tails extend two circular lugs with circular perforations, through which is threaded an axis bar. Part of the pin loop is wrapped around the axis bar as is a small fragment of the buckle plate. The buckle measures 2…

A fragment of a copper-alloy buckle plate dating to the Roman period. The fragment comprises the attachment end, with three D-sectioned hinge loops. The loops are decorated with longitudinal grooves around their outer ends, and have circular perforations obscured and filled with iron corrosion from a separate bar onto which the pin and buckle frame would originally have been hinged. The loops extend from a flat openwork plate with arched perforations bordered by two surviving projections, each one behind a loop and ending in a three-pronged fork. The projection behind the third loo…

A copper-alloy buckle plate of early Anglo-Saxon date, late sixth or early seventh century. It is of Marzinzik's type II.23b-ii, buckle with triangular copper-alloy plate, and has a triangular aperture in the centre. At each of the three points of the triangle are circular recesses; the recess at the apex of the triangle is slightly larger (c. 12 mm diameter) than the other two (c. 8.5 mm diameter). One of the smaller recesses is filled with a white adhesive, cement or filler; the other two are empty. There is a small detached piece of copper-alloy wire, half of a circle 8.5 mm in dia…
