Object type: HAWK BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hertfordshire

A Post-Medieval hollow spherical silver bell in the form of a hawking bell. The bell was formed of two domed sections put together to form a hollow sphere and a thin line remains around the maximum diameter of the bell. The lower hemisphere has damage in the form of small dents and a small irregular perforation. The upper hemisphere has at it's centre a complete but bent and squashed attachment loop. The centre of this hemisphere has a concave dent, presumably having occurred when the loop was squashed flat and bent against the bell. The loop seems to have had a rectangular cross-sect…

Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cambridgeshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete silver-gilt artefact that is probably the terminal from a spoon of Post-Medieval date, (c. AD 1500-1700). The incomplete handle of the spoon has a square cross section with chamfered corners measuring 3.4mm x 3.4mm. The broken end of the shaft seems to have been bent and tapers to the irregular break as thought it had pinched or broken off with a sort of chewing twisting action (possibly with a tool such as pliers rather than with human or animal teeth). At the complete end of the shaft, the shaft tapers slightly to 2.5mm x 2.7mm before expanding again to form the decora…

Description: Silver ring similar to Henig Type X. D-shaped in profile with wide shoulders which taper to a narrow band. It is crudely made with a roughened and heavily indented surface. Of particular note is a lip of metal on the underside of the bezel which, if a result of the manufacturing process, has not been neatly smoothed and finished. The flattened bezel has a central depression where a relief figure of the god Aesculapius has been impressed into the metal. The figure is simplistic and somewhat crudely rendered: the god wears a calf-length tunic, his head is turned to the left…
