The strands have a circular cross section, each strand having a diameter of 3.86mm tapering to 2.49mm. The three strands together give the band a diameter of 8.30mm tapering to 6.02mm. All of the strands at the narrower end are level but at the wider end they have broken off at different lengths. The bracelet has a mid green patina with lots of small patches of lighter green corrosion. The…

A copper-alloy incomplete Roman bracelet The fragment is a strip of copper-alloy that has a flattened oval or sub-rectangular cross-section 7.73mm wide and 2.60mm thick. The strip gradually tapers to a minimum of 5.66mm at one end and 7.29mm at the other. Both ends of the strip have sustained transverse breaks. The strip has an approximate length of 90.00mm and weighs 8.47g. The strip has been gently curved either by design or less likely subsequent alteration or damage. The strip has then suffered damage that resulted in the gentle arc of the curve being bent back and outwards which…

Fragment of narrow copper-alloy bracelet. Although both ends are broken, the curve of the bracelet is still obvious. It is decorated with continuous, slightly oblique, ribbing made up of quite broad grooves which reach right to the edges of the bracelet. The edges are not straight and parallel, but wiggle as if the more fragile edges of the grooves have become more worn than the more robust edges of the ridges. Flat cross-section. Quite corroded, with some parts of the surface missing. Maximum width 5 mm; uncurled length of fragment, 53 mm. Weight 2.12g. Roman, late third or fourth ce…

Short fragment of wide copper-alloy bracelet, 18 mm wide and 20 mm long. One end is bent and broken, but the other is original, and cut straight across. This terminal is decorated with four transverse zones of what looks like rouletted ornament; two strips of circles in the centre, flanked with a strip of ribbing on either side. The rest of the fragment is decorated with longitudinal lines; the edges each have a groove cut across with tiny nicks, then a broad flat-topped ridge, then a broad groove, and in the centre a series of narrower grooves and ridges. Two joining fragments from a wide copper-alloy bracelet, 16 mm wide; the fragments are c. 29 mm and c. 27 mm long and weigh 2.52g and 2.16g respectively. No terminal of this bracelet survives. The fragments are decorated with two broad longitudinal grooves down the centre, and running down the middle of each groove are some obliquely set oval pellets giving the impression of cabling. Quite corroded. Roman, 1st-2nd centuries AD. Similar examples are known from Colchester (Crummy 1983, 37, no. 1566, fig. 38) , Verulamium (Waugh & Goodburn 1972, 31, fig. 31).

Fragment of Roman bracelet made from thin flat copper-alloy strip. One end has a flared and flattened terminal broken across a central perforation, and the other end is broken (old break). A large ring-and-dot motif comes next, then two more transverse grooves. There is then a slightly raised square area, divided by grooves into two longitudinal panels, each decorated with four small do…

A fragment of copper-alloy wide bracelet of early Roman date. Only one terminal survives. The bracelet was formed of a single strip of copper-alloy with transverse terminals that have rounded corners, thus avoiding 90 degree angled corners. This fragment has a flat undecorated reverse with a flattened 'D' shaped cross section, being flat topped but slightly curved on the upper corners. The upper surface is decorated with what appears as a line of triangles with the apexes pointing right. The area between the terminal and this linear decoration has incised curved lines. An incomplete copper-alloy late Roman bracelet. This bracelet was formed of a single strip of copper-alloy that tapered at either end. One end tapers to form an up-turned recurving hook and the other end, now missing, would have tapered to a, probably blunt rounded, terminal with a circular perforation through which the hook would have fixed to hold the bracelet in place whilest being worn. See Crummy, N. Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman Small Finds From Excavations in Colchester 1971-9. 1983. Colchester Archaeological Trust, p.45-46, fig.47, nos.1724-1732. The surviving …

Two Late Bronze Age gold penannular bracelets, in a style similar in appearance to torcs. The smaller of the two bracelets weighs 57.24g. The band forms an open oval shape measuring 69.4mm x 53.1mm. The band has a 'D' shaped cross-section, convex on the outer surface and flat veering to slightly concave on the inner surface. At the centre of the artefact the band measures width 10.6mm x thickness 2.6mm. The bracelet has expanded D-shaped terminals, of c.12.1mm (and 12.2mm) by 8.6mm (and 8.7mm). The larger of the two bracelets weighs 138.94g. The band forms an open oval shape…

Gold penannular bracelet, round-section, slightly expanded plain terminals. The terminals are not parallel and one is raised higher than the other, and coils slightly into the bracelet. The bracelet's surface is facetted and it is unclear as to whether this is a result of working, or a decorative feature (or both). The terminals are also slightly twisted and do not meet. The bracelet is a very bright yellowy gold colour, and the surface is polished. Weight: 352.3g, Diameter: 85.83mm, Diameter of bar: 11.49mm The gold penannular bracelet can be dated to the Late Bronze Age (c. 11…
