A cast copper alloy small-long brooch of early Anglo-Saxon date, with a rectangular headplate decorated with rows of punched stamps around the edge of both head and foot. The stamps appear to be single crescents around the headplate, but double crescents around the splayed terminal of the foot; they may originally have been the same, but have been more worn around the head. One corner of the headplate is damaged or deliberately clipped. The break appears to be old. An incomplete copper-alloy Late Iron Age - early Roman Langon Down brooch dated AD 25-60. The pin would have been sprung and held within a cylinder spring case, and weighs 5.12g. This cylinder is formed from the expansion of the top and bottom edge of the wings which curve around forming a now incomplete encasement. This encasement is likely to have had a small notch for the pin to exit the encasement from. The pin no longer survives. The curved wings have a width of 19.3mm and height of 6.3mm. The ends of the wings are open and seem not to have had end-caps. No decoration is visibl…

The reverse surface has a more coppery pale green colour. As a result of the visual appearance non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis has been conducted on the surface (Department of Scientific Research, British Museum, File No.7651-8, 08/09/2017). The results of this test confirm that the alloy is mostly of copper, with tin and lead. Thus the results confirm that this item does not fulfil the definition …
