Silver gilt spoon terminal comprising a small seated animal on a moulded capital. The figure is crudely cast and worn and now resembles a small dog, but the type would seem to be that of the lion sejant affonté even though the animal does not appear to have a mane. Three 15th Century examples of lion sejant spoons are recorded and the type was a popular form made in the West Country in the 16th Century and also in Norwich into the early 17th Century. The bezel of a Medieval finger-ring, soldered to the remains of a flat hoop. The bezel takes the form of a crowned heart sprouting flowers, a popular Medieval symbol for love. The surface is much abraded and lacks definition. The bezel is silver-gilt and dates from the fifteenth or early sixteenth century. Dimensions: length 18 mm, width 21 mm.

CORONER'S REPORT Description of Object A Roman silver finger-ring lacking most of the hoop. One shoulder survives, in the form of the stylised head and upper curved neck of a water bird - a duck or swan - with marked brow ridge and broad splayed bill which supports the bezel. The high-projecting box bezel has angled octagonal walls and a rubbed over setting. It contains an oval nicolo intaglio with black substrate and light blue surface layer. A Medieval finger-ring, complete but distorted. The cusped setting holds a blue stone, probably a sapphire. The hoop is decorated along its two sides with a series of quatrefoils. The back of the hoop is left plain. Inside the hoop is an inscription, which reads: en bon foey The last word is likely to be a version of "foi", which would give the meaning "in good faith". A more substantial gold ring with a turquoise held in a similar setting was found among the jewels deposited with the Fishpool Hoard (BM MME 1967, 12-8, 2). The find consists of a rhomboidal fragment of strip of roughly rectangular section which has been cut at both ends. Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum identified the metal as brass, with no detectable precious metal. It is therefore not defined as Treasure under the terms of the Act.

Gold foliate accessory. It is made of fine pieces of gold, is broken in places and is therefore very delicate. Within a small circular recess to the front and bottom of this piece is green enamel. The presence of four loops at the corners suggests that it may have been sewn onto fabrics, though it was more than likely part of a necklace or bracelet. It is in the style of 19th-century revivalist jewellery and therefore is not classed as Treasure.

Silver spoon stem with seal-top, gilt and engraved with owner's initials in capitals, perhaps P (or R) L. The stem is broken off at the bowl with an illegible maker's mark on the back of the stem. The stem is also damaged just below the seal-top. Probably early 17th Century. As such, due to its age and precious metal content, this object qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

Small heart-shaped brooch, set with marcasite, which is polished metal cut in a matter so as to resemble a gem. Where the clasp of the brooch touches the outer face, a piece of marcasite is now missing. The use of marcasite in jewellery, as a replacement for diamonds, becomes practised in the late 18th century. The object falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act.

Small silver bell, made of two halves cut from sheet and soldered together, pea inside. Engraved decoration all round top half. Whereas similar bells were sewn onto clothing as fashionable accessories in the late medieval period, especially in the 15th Century, bells of this kind were, in the 16th Century, attached to hawks and falcons by means of a bewit; found on collars for dogs and cats; as well as being an element in horse furniture. Gold finger ring with square bezel, within which is set a stone. There is a slight reddish tint to the surface but non-destructive X-ray analysis has confirmed that this ring has a gold content of 89-92%, which is the equivalent of 22 carat gold. The stone, which is badly cracked, has been identified by Raman spectroscopy as quartz and could be referred to as a faintly banded agate. The d-section hoop expands at the shoulders, forming an openwork pattern of three prongs, all with geometric decoration. The ring weighs 8.84 grams. Silver finial in the form of a pine cone, broken off at the base, where it would have joined onto another element. It has been suggested that this may be a knop from a spoon. If this is so, the best comparison known to me is a spoon with enamelled bowl in the British Museum, P&E 1899, 12-9,3, inscribed AVE MARIA, which has been dated to the late 15th Century.
