Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Cambridgeshire

A copper alloy mount possibly from a shield, casket or scabbard dating to the Middle or Late Iron Age. The stud is circular in shape and hemispherical in section. The upper surface of the stud possesses a central circular depression. The depression is decorated with a knurled ring of a white substance, which has tentatively been identified as coral. The ring encircles a small, rounded, circular knop. The underside of the mount is flat with uneven iron corrosion adhering to it. There is a central, circular perforation. The mount has a diameter of 16mm and a thickness of 5mm. A similar s…

From the photograph of the reverse, this appears to be an early post-medieval hooked mount with a 'shield-shaped' plate and sturdy blunt hook. The plate has curved lower corners and is then waisted before flaring out again to a shaped top; the hook has outcurved edges at the top and parallel edges lower down, and has a straight cut-across end; it bends towards the reverse of the plate. The plate is torn through a central hole, originally circular, which probably once held a separate rivet. Without a photograph of the front it is impossible to know details of decoration. There are ma…

A copper alloy book or box mount dating to the medieval period. It s rectangular with a small circular perforation punched through each corner. At one end the plate is bent widthwise. On the upper surface of plate is an incised rectangular panel containing the letters IHS defined by rows of rocked tracer incisions. Traces of a white metal coating survive on the upper surface of the plate. The back of the plate is plain. Iron corrosion products are visible around the perforations suggesting that the mount was attached with iron rivets or nails. The plate measures 39mm in length and 31m…

A gilded copper-alloy mount of Early Medieval date. The mount is flat and circular, with a diameter of 20.70mm and a thickness of 2.07mm. The mount weighs 4.2g. The upper surface has a gilded chip-carved design consisting of three interlaced Style II animals in profile. Each has a single double-strand hind leg with a drop-shaped hip and three-toed foot, a triple-strand body (with the central strand beaded) and double-strand open jaws which bite the body of the animal in front. The upper parts of the relief are at the same height as the surface of the mount. The undecorated rim retains…

Description: Double-sided mount made from two similar thick niello-inlaid rectangular silver plates. The short edges are shaped, each around two rivets with a point between the two; all four separate silver rivets survive, three with circular heads at one end of 3mm diameter. Strangely, these expanded heads are set two on one face (in diagonally opposite corners) and one on the other face; the opposite ends are only 2mm in diameter and are flat. Two rivets appear to be complete and have lengths of 8.4mm and 9.1mm. The long edges are all decorated with a row of squarish pellets (lad…

Description: Incomplete silver object, perhaps part of a large thick silver Anglo-Saxon oval mount, or the terminal from a solid cast strap-end. The object is now D-shaped, with Winchester-style decoration in sharp relief, best viewed when the object is held with the curved side uppermost. The front is decorated with a central stem in relief. The lowest surviving element of the stem is an inverted triangle with a rectangular projection rising from the centre; the triangle is emphasised with two longitudinal grooves, one of which appears to have a tiny fragment of niello inlay, and …

A cast gilded silver terminal in the shape of an animal's head. Extensive gilding survives across much of the surface. The beast's head is elongated and its snout curves downwards and back upwards underneath. Subtle moulding represents the end of the upper and lower jaws, from which protrudes a long tongue. This widens as it extends to touch the underside of the beast's head, closing the loop and forming a circular aperture 3.90mm in diameter. The creature's mouth is formed from a single incised line following the curve of the muzzle. The mouth itself is contained within an incised bo…

A silver-gilt, incomplete mount or pendant of Medieval date. The fragment takes the form of a crowned lion right. The back is flat, and has sustained many scratches to the surface. The upper surface has been moulded and the lion's mane is formed by a series of irregularly shaped pellets that extend down to and around the shoulders of the fore legs. The front left leg is raised. The fore and hind right legs both have transverse breaks with the lower limbs missing. The lion is positioned passant. The tail is missing. A fragment of thin metal protrudes from the area behind the lion's nec…

Description: Tiny gold filigree-decorated mount in the shape of a bird, now slightly crushed but apparently never of very fine workmanship. It has a flat gold backplate with a beaded-wire border running around the small crescent-shaped profile head looking left, probably intended as a that of a predatory bird; two wings, one curved and pointed but the other (under the head) just a rounded circle; and flared base, perhaps intended to represent a tail. The beaded wire of this border is about 0.7mm in diameter and is very worn, rubbed flat in places and scraped in others; it is missing e…

Pyramidal mount made from gilded silver with relief decoration on the flat top and the sides. Each corner has a projecting pierced attachment lug, one having broken away (fresh breaks). The square panel on the top is decorated with four deeply engraved pointed-oval leaf or petal shapes arranged in a saltire and retaining gilding in the recesses. Each of the side panels is decorated with a central stem which branches at the top into two, each stem then curling downwards to end in a long crescent-shaped leaf. The bulbous leaves with pointed ends are similar to those on the plant ornam…

Possible early medieval cast copper alloy brooch or mount. The upper surface has a central empty circular setting surrounded by a lozenge. There are four recessed sub-triangular surrounds which have cast interlace. One terminal has a semi-circular overlap with the flat edge being the terminal, although this appears to be worn. The overlap creates an oval which is filled with interlace. The opposing terminal has two projecting lugs and on the reverse is a semi-circular lug running horizontally between the two with traces of iron corrosion. It has a dark green patina with some lighter g
