Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the ring fragment of 90-94%, the rest being copper; it weighs 2.1 grams. The ring has a flat, sub-circular, slightly convex bezel with narrow stubs of the ends of the hoop on either side; the rest of the hoop is missing; diameter, 16 mm (max); width, 24 mm. The find consists of one end of a cigar-shaped ingot of roughly plano-convex section, which has broken across a deep flaw. There is a fresh nick on one side, however caused. Ingots of similar form are well known from the Viking period, dating mainly from around the late 9th and 10th centuries, e.g. from the Cuerdale Hoard deposited around AD 905-910. They were probably used as bullion in trade and commercial transactions before the introduction of coinage and possibly also sometimes as stock pieces of precious metal for casting into jewellery.
