Roman gold finger-ring. The hoop consists of a flattened ribbed strip which expands to openwork triangular shoulders decorated with inturned peltas flanking a central serrated rib topped by a pellet. The shoulders support an oval box setting with remains of a pinkish coloured substance, probably adhesive for a gem which is now missing. The ring is rather squashed. Discussion: although no exact parallel can be cited, a similar ring with openwork shoulders was found at the Roman fort of Vechten in the Netherlands (Henkel 1913, no. 251). A gold finger-ring of Roman date. The hoop of the finger-ring is oval, almost circular with an external width of 15.6mm and height of 14.1mm. At the base of the hoop the band has an almost circular cross-section measuring 1.7mm x thickness 1.3mm. As the band expands round and upwards towards the shoulders the cross-section gradually becomes 'D' shaped. At the top of the hoop the band flattens and widens to form a flat oval bezel with a maximum width of 5.2mm, thickness of 0.7mm and length of 7.5mm. No join in the band is visible.
