Ceramic head of a woman, possibly Roman. In style, it resembles the faces seen on face-neck flagons of the third to fourth century AD, however the fabric of the object is coarse and is likely to be of building material type rather than vessel fabric. The head has centrally parted hair and is wearing a headdress although the highly abraded nature of the object has obscured the detail of this. Likewise, the features of the face are visible but the detail is lost to abrasion. The anthropomorphic object measures 56mm in length, 49mm maximum width and is 14mm thick.

A sherd of ceramic vessel. Probably a sherd of Late Neolithic, possibly Peterborough Ware, or from a Bronze age food vessel. The sherd is to small to determine a more accurate identification as a a greater length of the vessel rim and neck profile would be needed in order to provide a date based on stylistic characteristics. The sherd weighs 13.18g and is 10.42mm thick. The incomplete height of the vessel is 35.49mm. Use of a rim chart suggests that the vessel originally had a diameter of c.100mm and that only c.10% of the rim circumference survives. The outer surface of the sherd is …

Two ceramic vessel sherds of Prehistoric date. It has not been possible to date the sherds more precisely than to say that they are likely to have been made between the Neolithic and Iron Age. Both of the sherds are formed of a ubiquitus flint gritted fabric and both are from hand made vessels. The total weight of the two sherds is 10.70g. One sherd is dark grey, 7.67mm thick, weighs 5.33g and is 26.61mm x 22.96mm. This sherd shows a little surface treatment (smoothed or possibly burnished) and pinching. The second sherd is also a darker grey but slightly lighter than the first wi…

A Roman rim sherd from a ceramic mortarium. The fabric is a pale cream colour and the eleven surviving pieces of grit are black and angular. Weight 59.29g, thickness 6.35mm, the sherd is 83.85mm x 44.47mm. Use of a rim chart shows that the vessel would have had a diameter of 260mm and that 12.5% of the circumference of the vessel is represented by this sherd. In places the sherd has lost patches of its surface and none of the outer tip of the rim is present. Mortaria were used to grind food in the same way that a pestle and mortar are used today. A rough surface was created by pu…
