An assemblage of four ceramic items. One spindle whorl and three fragments of ceramic vessel, all of these sherds being of different fabric. Dating is recorded as uncertain as the manufacture date of the whorl could span a wide date range and no pottery specialist has assessed the sherds yet. All items found on the shoreline so may have been washed up from elsewhere. 1 – Ceramic spindle whorl. A ceramic spindle whorl of uncertain date. Spindle whorls were in use between the Iron Age through to the early Post-Medieval period. See https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecording…

A fragment of a ceramic tile of unknown date, probably Post-Medieval to Modern. This sherd weighs 12.0g, has a thickness of 13.3mm and measures 31.1mm x 23.5mm. This sherd is only slightly abraded. The tile has a reduced, mid to dark grey in colour, core and oxidised, orange in colour, upper and lower surface. The lower surface of the tile is much rougher in texture. There might be slight traces of a white substance on this lower surface, possibly the remains of a mortar. However, the sherd is covered in dried mud and it is not possible to study the fragment thoroughly. For the same r…

A small ceramic vessel sherd of uncertain date ranging between Medieval to Post-Medieval. This abraded sherd weighs 4.43g. It measures 21.3mm x 19.0mm with a thickness of 9.2mm. The vessel has a reduced pale to mid grey core and oxidised outer surfaces. However, the presumed inner surface is curious in that the oxidised layer of the fabric is sandwiched between the core and a slightly darker mid grey layer. This 'layer' appears to be integral to the sherd rather than having been concreted, applied or accidentally fixed to the vessel. The knowledge of a pottery specialist would be need…

A rim sherd from a ceramic vessel. This sherd weighs 18.91g. The broken edges are abraded. The sherd has a maximum width of c.40.0mm and maximum height of 30.0mm. The rim has a maximum thickness of 15.4mm reducing to 11.3mm below. Closer to the break, which is opposite the rim, the thickness reduces further to 6.7mm. On, what is presumed to be the inner surface, a pale yellow and mid green mottled glaze survives below the thickest part of the rim. It is uncertain what form of vessel this sherd is from, although an open, possibly platter style item cannot be ruled out. The opposite sur…

A rim sherd of ceramic vessel of uncertain ware type and date. The fabric has a reduced light to mid grey core with an oxidised buff coloured surface. The fabric is tempered with calcitic inclusions. Occasional grog inclusions and a sparse amount of mica is also visible in the vessel surface. All broken edges have mud adhering, making it impossible to thoroughly inspect the fabric. This sherd is likely to have been part of an open vessel such as a bowl. The external surface is decorated by the presence of a horizontal ridge that starts 10.60mm below the top of the rim. A rim sherd of Roman Nene Valley colour coat ware with barbotine decoration. This sherd is from an open vessel, for example a bowl. The fabric is pale, being cream/white in colour. The surface colour coat, where it survives, is dark grey to black in colour. All surfaces and broken edges have dried mud adhering in places. The rim has a thickness of 11.06mm. Weight is 21.24g. Use of a rim chart indicates that the vessel is likely to originally have had a diameter of 240mm and that the sherd represents c.just over 10% of the total circumference.
