Knaresborough ‘Ring’. This find was discovered and reported before the Treasure Act 1996 abolished Treasure Trove in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Circumstances of Discovery: On 9th June 1994 a gold ring was reported to the coroner for North Yorkshire by the owner who had recently purchased the find believing it to have been found in the Knaresborough area in North Yorkshire. Medieval silver strap-end and undiagnostic gold ingot The strap-end appears to have terminated in a hook and may have served as a type of chatelaine, not uncommon for key suspension, for example at the end of a belt. A medieval silver ear-scoop, bent, with a twisted shank. The top terminates in a pointed toothpick. The ear-scoop weighs 1.8 grams, the maximum length is 29mm, and analysis at the Department of Scientific Research, British Museum, has shown that it is made of silver.

The find consists of eleven fragments of a medieval, silver spoon.  Four of the fragments constitute the slender stem of the spoon which terminates in a diamond-shaped knop. The remaining seven fragments form part of the bowl.  The largest surviving fragment of the bowl is from the point at which it should meet the stem.  This is engraved with the motif of the ‘Hand of God’, poised in benediction.  A religious motif, however, does not preclude ownership of the spoon by a lay person.  The reverse of this fragment is crudely inscribed with the lett…

A silver seal-matrix of diminutive proportions.  Its sealing surface is circular and is engraved with three spheres within a three-pronged division, surrounded by a beaded border but without a legend.  The device is not easy to interpret.  The reverse is a cone-shaped hexagon terminating in a trefoil handle.  This tiny, enigmatic object was undoubtedly used as a personal seal rather in the fashion of a signet ring.

A hoard of coins and a finger-ring. The coins are mostly official English issues, but with two coins of the Burgundian Netherlands, double patards, which were legal tender here at a valuation of fourpence, thanks to a convention between Edward IV and Charles the Bold in 1469.  The gold coin is of fine gold, over 94% pure.  The English silver coins are sterling standard, 92.5% fine, and the Burgundian coins are 80% fine silver. Circular medieval silver mount, with four knops around the outside, some damage to the edges. At the centre is an equal-armed cross with rounded ends, enclosed within a filigree circular border, and surrounded by six pairs of sub-square cells with X-shaped motifs incised at centre. Nondestructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of the object conducted at the British Museum show a silver content of approximately 96 per cent.

Silver Anglo-Saxon hooked tag, complete, l. 33mm, w. 14mm, wt. 1.95g.  This piece has a triangular plate with elegantly scalloped top and two internal holes near the corners for attachment. The field is plain but the long edges are decorated with borders of incised ladders.  There is a slight bulge above the tapering hook.  The back is plain.  This is probably a dress attachment which could have been used for veiling or gartering, probably the former because it is very light-weight. Heavier-duty hooked tags may also have been used to fasten purses.

The figure in the panel on the right appears to hold in her right hand a tower, and may represent St Barbara. The figure on the left is unidentified, and may represent a male saint. A medieval finger ring, now badly distorted and measuring 21mm across its greatest diameter.  The ring is engraved with the phrase en bon an (‘in a good year’).    The inscription is punctuated with sprigs of foliage. The ring is silver and was once entirely gilded.  The gilding only survives on the interior of the hoop and in the deepest recesses of the engraved design.  Traces of solder can be seen between the words bon and an on both the interior and exterior surfaces of the ring.  It dates to the fifteenth century.
