A Medieval copper alloy book-clasp, dating to c.AD 1200 - 1400. Howsam type A.8.4 The clasp is formed of a single sheet of copper-alloy, folded in half at the terminal and secured at the attachment end with a single rivet. There is a further single flat headed rivet in the loop. There is a circular lobe adjacent to the terminal, it is hollow domed. Now missing from the lobe is an attachment loop.

An incomplete Medieval to Post-Medieval copper alloy book fitting, dating to AD 1400 - 1600. It is a book clasp of Howsam Type A3.
The clasp has a flat hook at one end projecting from a transverse rectangular plate. The body is lozenge shaped and there is a sub-rectangular plate at the other end. This plate has a single rivet hole in the centre with the iron rivet still in place, with iron corrosion surrounding it. No decoration is evident on either face of the item. Both faces have a brown-green patina.

Copper alloy book mount. The has been made from a pressed sheet that has a domed centre with hollowed-back, a pierced central circular hole (3mm in diameter) would have held a rivet which is now missing. The basal flange is in the form of an elaborate quatrefoil with each arm made from a semicircular projection that has a pointed tip.

An incomplete Medieval to Post Medieval cast copper-alloy book clasp (AD 1400-1600). Howsam type A3. The book clasp consists of a rectangular plate with narrowed hook and a break at the opposite end. The surface is decorated with a central circular boss surrounded by a floral motif of a flower with four surviving petals containing trefoils. There is a small circular perforation next to one of the petals. The reverse of the plate is undecorated, with a circular recession corresponding with the boss.

The object is composed of a solid cast loop, which has a plano-convex roundel with a central perforation 2.74mm in diameter, and a projecting zoomorphic terminal at its end. A drilled hole passes through the projecting terminal from side to side which has a diameter of 2.35mm. A heavily corroded copper alloy book clasp. This example is rectangular in plan with two copper alloy rivets retained at the rear. The forward edge has a narrowed tab that has been bent around to form a hook. The face is decorated with two concentric rings towards the rear.
Artefacts such as this have been discovered during excavation in York which dated to the 15th and 16th centuries (Ottaway & Rogers, 2002, 2937-2939)

A heavily corroded copper alloy book clasp. This example is rectangular in plan with two semicircular notches on either side and three V-shaped notches running down the rear edge. The forward edge has a narrowed tab that has been bent around to form a hook. The face is decorated with six square stamps that that have an eight paralleled flowed within and a ring a dog at the rear.
Artefacts such as this have been discovered during excavation in York which dated to the 15th and 16th centuries (Ottaway & Rogers, 2002, 2937-2939)

A fragment of a copper-alloy book clasp fitting of Medieval to Post-Medieval date, AD 1400-1650. Howsam type A.3.
Little of the book clasp remains, all that remains is a sub-rectangular fragment of one end of the fitting plate. This plate has two straight edges and two irregular edges featuring covering worn breaks. Close to the long straight edge are two complete perforations, probably rivet holes. A third incomplete hole is present but broken due to worn breaks. The fragment does not appear to be decorated. The surface features a white-metal or silver coating.

An incomplete probable Book Clasp or Buckle plate of late Medieval to Post-Medieval date (AD 1500-1650). As Howsam type A.6.2. The object is composed of two sheets of coper allow affixed by three perforated rivets at the terminal end. The terminal is trilobed and expands to a sub-rectangular attachment with a central sub-rectangular open portion in the centre of the frame. A partial attachment bar is retained between the inner open portion. The upper portion of the trilobed end is decorated around each of the rivets with three concentric circles.

A small post Medieval copper alloy book clasp (cf. Howsam type A.3 (hooked fishtail)). The object has a slightly flared terminal at the rear end, with a scalloped rear edge and a single rivet hole in the middle which retains a copper alloy rivet. The front of the clasp has moulded decoration with two transverse bands of pellets and lozenges towards the front and oblique panels of what may be fleur-de-lys flanking the rivet hole. A small and incomplete hook projects from the front edge. Circa 16th-17th century.

Abraded and incomplete medieval to post-medieval hooked and straight-sided book clasp of Howsam 2016 Type A.3.1. The fishtail terminal has been lost but the diverging sides indicate that it was once present. Near the jagged and non-recent break a rivet hole lies in the centre of a punched double concentric ring. The object is part of a three part hinged and hooked book fitting. The object is sub-triangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. At the top of the plate, there are two attachment loops that are sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular to sub-rectangular in cross section and which appear to have been formed by bending the projections back upon themselves. An incomplete copper alloy object, probably a Post Medieval book clasp dating from AD 1600 - 1800. It is sub-rectangular, with a wide blunt hook, or an incomplete hinge loop at one end. The sides are a complex scalloped shape. The other end is straight but is probably a break. There are traces of elief decoration on the front, and the reverse is plain.
