Circumstances of Find Found by Messrs D. Philips and B. Plason with the aid of a metal detector about 70cm below the field surface, 1.12.06. The initial discovery of the coins was made in and around the remains of their plough damaged pottery container. A small excavation was then made by the Herts. and Beds. FLO, Julian Watters. This excavation yielded more coins and pottery. Watters concluded that the coins had been deposited on the same spot as a Roman rubbish pit or midden; however, due to the fact that the find had already been removed prior to investigation a stratigraphica…

A group of ten post-medieval Nuremberg copper-alloy jettons all of the 'Rose / orb' type probably deposited in the early 17th century all in the same hole; no traces of a container have been discovered. They can be divided into two groups twice, along different lines: The first grouping is chronological: three unsigned jettons possibly attributable to the early Schultes dynasty (c. 1553 - c. 1603 AD), seven jettons of Hans Krauwinckel II (fl. 1586-1635 AD). The second grouping is by size: four jettons c. 23mm in diameter (the three unsigned examples and one of…

Description: A small late Bronze Age hoard consisting of a bronze spearhead, two joining short sword blade fragments and a possible chisel terminal fragment. 1: A pegged bronze spearhead, almost complete with the end of the tip missing and part of the socket mouth missing, the tip break appears ancient but the socket break seems more recent as there is a fresh scar along its edge. Next to this fresher break there is a worn rounded edge which may be due to an original casting flaw. Other damage along the blade edges, in the form of at least four dents causing burring on the blade fac…

Hoard of ten pieces of Bronze Age metalwork found together. The pieces include seven fragments of ingot, one unidentified tool and two axe fragments. Details of the individual pieces can be found in the four records attached to this summery record. Ten copper alloy fragments were placed in ground. This deposition practice is well documented during this period Traditional interpretations see these as metalworkers' reserves stored for later use. However, the failure to recover so many stored metal objects implies that recovery may not always have been the aim. The composition of t…

In 1984 a Founders Hoard of late Bronze Age metal work was unearthed. The Hoard consisted of eight objects. Two of the objects join together to form what could be part of a bronze bowl or caldron; however the piece could simply be a fragment of metal working debris. The Hoard consists of the following: 1) A fragment of a socketed axe SUSS-8F4D33 (found within the metal detectorists collection - it was not kept with the rest of the hoard, but is likely to be from the same find site, the detectorist is deceased). 2) Two fragments of a bronze bowl or caldron or possibly metal worki…
