A hoard of 134 copper alloy Roman nummi, mostly 4th century. What follows is an extract of the report written by Dr. Eleanor Ghey of the Department of Coins & Medals, British Museum. The coins are a mixed group but the majority (66 identifiable coins) are Valentinianic nummi and some later nummi dating up to AD 402. The group also included a worn sestertius of Antonine date, two radiates of Claudius II and a number of earlier nummi. The majority of coins were worn but the composition and spatial proximity of the group probably reflects that of a scattered late Roman hoard. Sum…

TREASURE CASE 2015 T73. A lump of fused silver medieval pennies. The collection conisits of an uncertain number of pennies, possibly originally in a tube of sorts as the coins are stacked one upon the other. The lower section has been heated to a high temperature, causing the silver pennies to melt into an unrecognisable silver lump. There are three or four pennies near the top that although fused still resemble long cross and possibly short cross pennies, however they are all but unidentifiable. These may have been melted deliberately contemporarily, as the practice of modern stubble…

A hoard of debased long-cross pennies/coins, possibly of Edward I (AD 1272-1307). Treasure case No. 2009 T756. Total weight: 1066gms. The coins are mostly consolidated; they were originally in a small vessel (recently broken) and have taken on the shape of this vessel in their consolidation. The coins all appear to have suffered some corrosion as they are mostly white in colour. Some coins display a green copper staining showing that some of the silver is debased. From the consolidated mass it is hard to estimate the quantity of coins but there may be c.200-300.

Description: 10 copper-alloy Roman coins and two iron objects (photo attached). The coins are in poor condition, and quite accreted, so it's difficult to make out the surface details, but likely to be later Roman given their size. One appears to be perforated, so may have been reused. One of the iron objects is socketed with a single nail hole and would have been hafted - probably an agricultural implement of some kind but needs x-ray to get a clearer view.  The other iron object is a nail. Discussion and conclusions: The coins and iron objects were deliberately deposited wit…

The siliqua was the main silver denomination of the late Roman period and the miliarensis was double this denomination. The bulk of the coins are from the period of the breakaway Gallic empire, which is typical for a British hoard of this date. A fragment of what appears to be a very abraded knobbed bracelet (probably Iron Age) was received with the hoard but it not thought to be related to it. Hoard of two incomplete cast copper alloy unlooped palstaves, or axeheads, dating from the Middle Bronze Age. One palstave has been broken cleanly into two pieces, probably by farming machinery since deposition, and the other palstave has just the butt end remaining, missing part of its flanged sides and its stop ridge to hold the haft or handle, and all of its blade. The more complete palstave is decorated below the stop-ridge with a raised shield shape with curved sides that tapers to a point as it extends on to the blade section. The butt end of the palstave is squared off and then…

Hoard of fifty-three cast copper alloy fragments of Late Bronze Age date including the centre of a winged axe and an incomplete socketed axe with a flanged blade, missing its rectangular collar and part of its side loop, and decorated on the upper half of both faces with two converging ribs that appear like a narrow shield motif. This narrow shield shape is similar to that engraved in the stone mould (no.5) from Tremough, Cornwall, illustrated in Jones, Gossip & Quinnell, 2015, on page 95, fig.5.13, which is thought to have produced a slender socketed axe, but with a shield pattern mo…

Roman coin hoard of 76 coins dating from 49 BC-AD 209. The coins submitted for consideration consist of a group of 2 silver and 74 copper alloy coins, 73 of which are mainly of the large-sized copper alloy denomination known as the sestertius with a few smaller asses and dupondii. The coins are much worn and some have lost edge and surface, with only a corroded core remaining. For this reason it is difficult to be certain of the denomination of the smaller coins, although the thickness of some suggests that they were also originally sestertii. These coins are predominantly second cent…
