A hoard of 134 copper alloy Roman nummi, mostly 4th century. What follows is an extract of the report written by Dr. Eleanor Ghey of the Department of Coins & Medals, British Museum. The coins are a mixed group but the majority (66 identifiable coins) are Valentinianic nummi and some later nummi dating up to AD 402. The group also included a worn sestertius of Antonine date, two radiates of Claudius II and a number of earlier nummi. The majority of coins were worn but the composition and spatial proximity of the group probably reflects that of a scattered late Roman hoard. Sum…

A collection of Roman lead alloy (pewter) table ware, found in a secure stratigraphic context during excavations after discovery with a metal detector. The pewter set was discovered in a pile, upturned, in the remains of a burnt room, later discovered (through geophysics) to be in a much larger chambered building, probably a villa complex. The pewter table set consists of: a) Conical bowl with pellet-bead rim (complete; Lee Type 1) b) Square flange, pedestal bowl (incomplete; new form) c) Octagonal dish (incomplete; Lee Type 2 for bowls) - chicken bones were found directly beneath…

TREASURE CASE 2015 T268. A small collection of three metal objects dating to the Roman period. The objects are: one damaged silver miniature axehead, possibly a pendant, one copper alloy contemporary copy of a nummus of the House of Constantine (reverse FEL TEMP REPARATIO, fallen horseman reverse type, c. AD 353-360) possibly having been cut down, and an incomplete copper alloy tool, possibly a woodworking tool such as a chisel, or possibly a knife, or alternatively a wax spatula / stylus. These three objects were found together and therefore constitute a small 'hoard'. The objects ma…

TREASURE CASE 2015 T73. A lump of fused silver medieval pennies. The collection conisits of an uncertain number of pennies, possibly originally in a tube of sorts as the coins are stacked one upon the other. The lower section has been heated to a high temperature, causing the silver pennies to melt into an unrecognisable silver lump. There are three or four pennies near the top that although fused still resemble long cross and possibly short cross pennies, however they are all but unidentifiable. These may have been melted deliberately contemporarily, as the practice of modern stubble…

A hoard of debased long-cross pennies/coins, possibly of Edward I (AD 1272-1307). Treasure case No. 2009 T756. Total weight: 1066gms. The coins are mostly consolidated; they were originally in a small vessel (recently broken) and have taken on the shape of this vessel in their consolidation. The coins all appear to have suffered some corrosion as they are mostly white in colour. Some coins display a green copper staining showing that some of the silver is debased. From the consolidated mass it is hard to estimate the quantity of coins but there may be c.200-300.

Treasure Case 2015 T900. A collection of c. 19 objects, consisting of c.85 fragments thereof, of a Middle Bronze Age 'Ornament Horizon' hoard (c. 1400-1200 BC). The items were buried in an undecorated bucket urn laid on its side, probably in a small pit, however severe truncation by the plough had destroyed all but the very base of the context and under half of the vessel. Many of the artefacts were found within 10-15m of the hoard deposit, and were intially recovered by metal detecting. Once a suspected concentration was identifed the local FLO was informed and a controlled ex…

Five fragments of copper alloy objects, all of Middle Bronze Age (Ornament Horizon) date, c. 1400-1200 BC. These fragments are remnants of a hoard reported and concluded at 2015 T900. These five objects comprise a fragment of a torc and four other unidentifiable fragments. These objects have been reported as a separate case as the main hoard had already been declared treasure at the time of discovery of these new items. These items have been dispersed by ploughing as had several other objects and fragments of the original hoard, however there is now doubt that they were originally part…

Addendum to previous cases to BERK-C8CB8E (2017 T635) and BERK-456EE1 (2015 T900). Likewise the small hoop is probably similar ring - as described - is the rectangular fragment blade or flat copper alloy. Two Early Medieval gold tremisses dating between the sixth and seventh century. One Early Medieval spearhead possibly dating between the fifth and sixth centuries but possibly even later. Spearhead - An early medieval iron spearhead with a split socket. The blade is corroded but stable, long and tapers towards the tip, which is bent back to form a C-shaped bend. It is unclear if this is deliberate or caused by damage. There is a central midrib feature visible on both sides of the blade (particularly at the widest point), and runs throughout the length of the blade from tip to socket. …
