A Late Fourteenth Century hoard of English and French Jettons. The hoard consists of seven English and twenty four French / Tournai copper alloy jettons, two billon coins, one of Spain the other of Brittany, and three blank discs. This group of thirty six pieces (plus one other at present separated from the main group) dates from the second half of the 14th century. The loss of these pieces most probably took place within a few years on either side of 1400. The presence of three blank discs suggests that this group may well be part or whole of a working set of counters. The varying…

Items Discovered 1. The sword blade fragment is a short length of blade weighing 11.52 grammes; the lentoid midrib is demarcated by two grooves. Analysis of the metal indicates that it is bronze. Swords like this are known as Carp's Tongue swords because the shape of the blade tip is said to resemble the tongue of that fish. Few complete Carp's Tongue swords are known in Britain. Most specimens consist of scrap fragments imported in that form from the mainland of Europe (Sealey 19915,7 with refs). They were current in the Ewart Park phase of the late Bronze Age dated c.1020…

Treasure report by Adrian Marsden: A hoard of cu alloy objects found in close association with one another and very close to a radiate imitation manufacturer's hoard found in November 2004 (see file). These comprise two RB bracelets and 10 sestertii of the second century. The coins, where condition at deposition can be ascertained, were all heavily worn, suggesting a mid-third century date. This suggests that both bracelets and coins were intended for melting down to produce radiate imitations, a theory made more likely by the fact that one sestertius appears to have had pieces cut…

Three fragments of copper alloy representing parts of two, or possibly three, spearheads. The remains consist of sections of the blades, consisting of tapering tubes either side of which are flukes, separated from the tubes by well defined grooves. It appears that the spearheads were broken in antiquity which is not uncommon. The cross-sections suggest that these fragments come from basal looped spearheads, a form used during the Middle Bronze Age, around 1500-1100BC. As these objects all belonged to the same type of weapon and were found in the same area it is likely that they were as…

A previous find of 16 Iron Age coins was made in June and July 2008 by the same finder in the same location (2008 T412). Like the previous 16 coins, this coin is also a 'Flat Linear I' potin. While the majority of Iron Age coins were produced by striking a gold, silver or bronze blank between a pair of dies, potins were instead cast in moulds and made from a lead/tin-rich bronze alloy. Although highly abstract, it is clear that their designs copied earlier types which depicted a human head and a butting bull, originally derived from the coinage of the Greek city of Massalia (Marse…

A hoard of 35 Late Bronze Age copper-alloy objects. It comprises 15 socketed axeheads of various types and sizes, nine of which are more or less complete, the remainder incomplete due to old breaks. One is much smaller than the remainder, and one has more elaborate moulded decoration extending from the mouth. At least two examples appear to have the remains of casting sprues attached to their mouths and others may have been deliberately broken. In addition there is a fragment from a winged palstave or axe, as well as 4 smaller fragments from the mouths of socketed axes. The axes were …

A forger's hoard. This record and the associated records linked to this one are for 121 coins or blanks which were found in around 1994. The finder also found a fragment of copper alloy rod, a sherd of courseware pottery and a brooch. Some coins (not included in the above total) were given to the farmer. From a study of the material it is most likely that this constitutes a forgers' hoard which consisted mainly of metal blanks, destined to be struck into coins. Given that the two identifiable coins are 'barbarous radiates' of the period c. 275-85, it is reasonable to assume that the h…

Summary: Bronze Age hoard consisting of 191 objects including wood and cloth. The finds were found with a metal detector in the ploughsoil over an area at least 30ft. across, and the site was subsequently excavated by Andrew Rogerson. The site was ridged for asparagus immediately prior to the first discovery. During excavation, the surface was removed to reveal an almost square pit (300 x 300mm) cut into natural orange clay to a depth of 90mm. The very clearly defined edges of the cut indicate that the pit was not left open for a great length of time. The upper surface was ba…

The group also included a worn sestertius of Antonine date, two radiates of Claudius II and a number of earlier nummi. This suggests that the original casting was flawed and that the objec…
