A Late Fourteenth Century hoard of English and French Jettons. The hoard consists of seven English and twenty four French / Tournai copper alloy jettons, two billon coins, one of Spain the other of Brittany, and three blank discs. This group of thirty six pieces (plus one other at present separated from the main group) dates from the second half of the 14th century. The loss of these pieces most probably took place within a few years on either side of 1400. The presence of three blank discs suggests that this group may well be part or whole of a working set of counters. The varying…

I have examined 27 coins reported found in the Clitheroe area of Lancashire. All are official English silver coins, and will thus have a silver content of 92.5% fine metal – the sterling standard. A summary list of the coins follows (a more detailed catalogue is attached to this report). 1 groat and 1 penny of Edward III, 4th Coinage (1351-77); 3 pennies of the mid or late 14th century, details uncertain; 1 groat and 6 pennies of Henry V (1413-22); 9 groats; 3 halfgroats; 1 penny and 2 halfpennies of Henry VI, Annulet issue (1422-7) These coins are evidently a single group …

British Museum Report on Treasure Case 2009 T59 "I have examined 30 coins reported found at North Cave, East Riding. All but one are silver coins of the English Short Cross type, in production 1180 to 1247, mostly full pennies but also with three cut halfpennies (smaller denominations were created by cutting pennies into halves or quarters, to make halfpennies and farthings). The remaining coin is a penny of the equivalent Scottish coinage, struck to the same standards and relatively commonly found in English currency in the 13th century, especially in the north of England. Description of find 3 coins in close proximity to one another. All are close in date, two being Watford type pennies of Stephen, the other being an uncertain penny of similar date, probably one of North's uncertain Baronial issues. These almost certainly represent part of a scattered hoard; pennies of this period are very rare as single finds and the presence of three together is best understood in the context of a scattered hoard. Catalogue Stephen, penny, Watford type, uncertain mint, 1136-45 (North 873) Obv: STIEFNE[...], Bust right, sceptre before. Rev: GODRICV[...], Cross…

A hoard of fused silver coins, probably Medieval late 12th - 13th century. Curator's report: I have examined a fused group of coins reported found in Wandsworth, London. There are virtually no details that can be made out, but from the size of the coins and perhaps a couple of visible letters, it appears likely to me that they are late 12th or 13th century silver pennies, possibly of the Short Cross coinage (1180-1247). If this is correct, they would have a silver fineness of over 90%. The weight of the group is 21.45g, suggesting that there might be around 15 coins pres…

Five medieval coins were found in the area. Four are short cross pennies, all of the London mint whilst the fifth coin is a cut short cross halfpenny, also of London. All the pennies are in crisp, barely-circulated condition; apparent wear on a couple of coins being due to areas of flat striking. Three of the pennies are of the moneyer Abel, the other two coins of Ricard. All the pennies are class 5 or 6 issues of John whilst the cut halfpenny is a class 3 or 4 issue of Richard I or John. The similarities of condition, date of striking not to mention the fact that all coins are of Lond…

All are official silver coins of the English kings from Edward I to Edward III, and will have a fineness of the traditional sterling standard, 92.5% fine metal. A detailed list accompanies this report. There are six pennies and one halfpenny in the group. The latest dates to the 1360s and the older coins are generally reduced to the lower weight standard introduced in 1351, so it is very likely that this is a group deposited togetheron a single occasion. A hoard of debased long-cross pennies/coins, possibly of Edward I (AD 1272-1307). Treasure case No. 2009 T756. Total weight: 1066gms. The coins are mostly consolidated; they were originally in a small vessel (recently broken) and have taken on the shape of this vessel in their consolidation. The coins all appear to have suffered some corrosion as they are mostly white in colour. Some coins display a green copper staining showing that some of the silver is debased. From the consolidated mass it is hard to estimate the quantity of coins but there may be c.200-300.

I have examined a group of coins reported found in the Ilam area in Staffordshire. All are official silver coins of the medieval kings of England and will therefore be of the traditional sterling standard, c. 92.5% fine metal. Three denominations are present: pennies, half-groats (twopences) and groats (fourpences). The coins range in date from the early 14th century to the early reign of Henry VI. This range is wholly consistent with 15th century currency, since there was no complete English recoinage after 1279 and older coins, increasingly worn and clipped down to more recent weigh…

A group of 10 coins from Coney Weston in Suffolk. All are silver, 9 are English, 8 of King Henry VI and one older piece too worn and clipped to date precisely. There are 5 groats (the four-penny coin) and 4 pennies. The remaining coin is a groat of James I, King of Scots. TREASURE CASE 2015 T73. A lump of fused silver medieval pennies. The collection conisits of an uncertain number of pennies, possibly originally in a tube of sorts as the coins are stacked one upon the other. The lower section has been heated to a high temperature, causing the silver pennies to melt into an unrecognisable silver lump. There are three or four pennies near the top that although fused still resemble long cross and possibly short cross pennies, however they are all but unidentifiable. A hoard of copper alloy medieval to early post-medieval objects (AD c. 1200 - c. 1600). The earliest datable objects in the hoard are 13th century Limoges mounts and the latest is a Pax dating to the 16th century. The hoard consists of: 1). Fragments from a Limoges cross or casket, including: a). An incomplete Limoges figurine, missing most of its enamel. The mount is anthropomorphic, in the shape of the head and body of a robed figure with one hand held across the chest. The head is round and solid but the body is domed so that the front is convex and the reverse is concave.…

A 'hoard' or collection of 43 silver coins. The following report has been kindly provided by Carl Savage BSc MA FSA Scot PCIfA: I have examined 43 silver coins as reported found from the Wigan area, the age distribution of the coins strongly suggests a collection rather than coin taken out of currency. The coins range from the Short Cross period (1180-1247) to Charles I (the latest coins being from the late 1630s-40s), as well as Scottish issues of Alexander III and possibly David II and a foreign sterling of Gaucher of Chatillon. There is the possibility that some of the unidentif…

Description: The hoard comprises 20 silver pennies of the Long Cross type introduced by Edward I in 1279 (c.1282-1310). There are two Scottish coins: one of Alexander III's Second Coinage (c.1280-92), and one of John Baliol (c.1292-96). The coins date from between 1280 and 1310. The coins were recovered from an arable field, spread over an area of approximately 20 metres. It is likely that the hoard was deposited during a single episode in an organic container that has since decomposed. No pottery sherds or other related finds were identified. Six worn late medieval coins, mostly pennies with their weight reduced by clipping, found within an area of c.15m square. The latest coin [as discerned by this reporter] is no. 2 below, an early (1485-1490) issue of Henry VII (1485-1509), in much the same sorry state as the rest of the group. Given their discovery within a restricted area, they are deemed probable components of a small hoard, perhaps equivalent in their contemporary monetary value to a single day's wage for a skilled workman. They are accordingly submitted to the Treasure process, reference 2019 T365. 1: Silver c…

2019 T280 Godshill, Isle of Wight I have examined six coins reported found at Godshill, Isle of Wight. All are official late-medieval silver coins, with a fineess, therefore, of 90.5% silver, i.e. sterling standard. All the coins are one denomination, the groat of fourpence, the highest-value silver coin then in use. There is one each of Edward III and Henry V and four of Henry VI, the earliest dating to 1369-77 and the latest to the years around 1430 (see detailed list below). The coins would certainly have circulated together, in around the second quarter of the 15th centu…

A hoard of twenty five Medieval silver coins dating to AD 1280-1355. The coins were found within an area of approximately 10 inches, at a depth of approximately 8-12 inches. The finder reports that three of the coins, plus another two, were held together by the soil. It appears that some of the coins have an impression of a long cross on them as though they had been tightly packed together for some time and the long cross on the reverse of the coin above had impressed itself onto the coin below.  There was also discolouration from staining, presumably from being in the soil t…

A dispersed hoard of 14 medieval silver coins dating between c.AD1299-1377, from the reigns of Edward I (AD1272-1307) and Edward III (AD1327-1377). Description: The coins were recovered over an area of approximately 900 square metres (30m x 30m), centred on the findspot, and from a depth of up to 15cm. It is likely that the hoard represents a lost purse dispersed in the topsoil by subsequent agricultural activity. In addition to the medieval coins, a single probable post medieval coin was also found. This coin is not likely to be part of the medieval coin hoard, but was rather a loca…

The coins are mostly official English issues, but with two coins of the Burgundian Netherlands, double patards, which were legal tender here at a valuation of fourpence, thanks to a convention between Edward IV and Charles the Bold in 1469.  The gold coin is of fine gold, over 94% pure.  The English silver coins are sterling standard, 92.5% fine, and the Burgundian coins are 80% fine silver. The coins range in date from the 14th or early 15th century (a now fragmentary halfpenny and some very worn pennies) to the latest coins in the hoard…
