Overview
31 lead discs, 29 of which were discovered in context in three groups (hereafter Group A, B, and C). The weights appear to have been placed into the side of a ditch. Group A comprised 10 lead discs; Group B comprised 5 discs and Group C comprised 9 lead discs. Four further lead weights were discovered scattered in the plough soil in the immediate area of the stratified finds; three more were discovered in the area by another detectorist who also has permission to search the site. Owing to the small scale of the excavation it was not clear in what wider context the finds we…

CORONER'S REPORT
Description of find: The coins, originally totaling at least five in number, had been stacked one on top of the other. At some time extreme heat has caused them to fuse together, this process rendering all details apart from one side of a fragmentary coin illegible. This one legible face is a small cross pattee type, presumably a reverse, of early tenth century date. The lettering is crude and this coin would seem to be a contemporary imitation from the Danelaw. A similar group of fused pennies was found at Aylsham in 2002. The legend reads [...]HRlDGAR[...].…

Two fused fragmentary pennies, both of Aethelred II's 'crux' type, struck c. 991-7. A blob of melted silver is fused to the surface of one of the coins; this may have constituted part of a third coin although it is equally possible that it came from one of the two coins present. The fact that the coins were lying in contact with one another before fire fused them together demonstrates that they must have been lost or hidden at the same time.
Minted in Wallingford, possibly by the moneyer Aelfwig.
The coins are in good condition and this suggests that they were deposited (…

A hoard of Viking silver bracelets, Treasure case 2004 T453.
The hoard consists of 22 pieces of silver, comprising 20 flattened bracelets, 1 silver ingot, and 1 decorated, twisted silver bar from a spiral bracelet. There are also numerous fragments of decayed lead sheet found around the silver pieces, most probably from a lead wrapping or container in which the hoard would have been buried, which form part of the Treasure find by association.
Surface metal analysis of a representative selection of the items conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver cont…

~~The ingots are all silver and comprise three complete and one fragmentary finger-shaped metal ingots with rounded ends, of silvery-grey appearance. The combined weight of this component of the hoard amounts to 115.09g, representing some 90% per cent of the total surviving weight of the hoard (127.77g). This points to a primary purpose of silver storage. The ingots are described individually:
Ingot 1: thin finger shaped ingot with rounded underside and flatter top (slight central indent, probably an assaying nick). One end of the ingot has been chopped off. Maximum length 55.8mm; …

Description: The hoard contains five silver coins of the Last Small Cross type of Aethelred II (978-1016). Last Small Cross type were issued between c.1009-1017, toward the end of his reign. All five coins are conform to the 777 type (fig 8) set out by North (1994, 160), with the obverse inscription 'ÆÐELRED REX ANG LOR'and the bust style indicating they are from Lincoln and York district mints. The size of the group is consistent with the contents of a purse.
Coins of this type routinely have a silver content far in excess of the 10% threshold stipulated by the Treasure Act (1…

A group of Early Medieval silver pennies (sceats) that have been fused together, dating from c.650-800 AD. It is unclear how many there are in the group, but it is likely there is more than 12. The coins have been bent and broken, and are now worn. One coin is possibly primary series C type dating from AD 700-710, with the reverse depicting the limbs of a lower cross which form the base of a standard. (Abramson 2006, page 94, CZ10).
On the database there is another group of three pennies or sceats that have fused together, see record NARC-7E5766.

A hoard of eight silver pennies of Aethelred II minted between 997 and 1009AD. The hoard comprises six 'long cross' issues minted between 997-1003AD and two 'helmet type' issues minted between 1003-1009AD. This suggests a date of deposition around or shortly after 1009AD. No vessel was recovered and it is suggested that the hoard represents an accidental loss rather than the deliberate deposition with the intention of recovery. The coins are in poor condition; three are incomplete. The hoard is catalogued below. Number (No.) refers to coin photograph numbers, the coins were assigned R…

Description:
Silver hoard made up of an ingot, a strap end and a fragment from a penannular brooch.
The ingot is broadly triangular in section, with curved corners. One end has been cut completely smooth while the other end has been half cut and then bent off, leaving a rough surface across half of the face. The ingot is 16.85mm in length, 11.66mm in width and 8.15mm in thickness. It weighs 11.63g.
The strap end is missing its attachment end; what remains has broken into two fragments. It is broadly rectangular in shape, narrowing slightly towards the unbroken end. The fro…

Discussion: Two silver coins found in close proximity, one broken with a patinated break. The coins are both Second Hand issues of Aethelraed II, dating to AD 985-991, from different mints and moneyers. Such coins are relatively rare single finds in Somerset and the discovery of two in close proximity of exactly the same ruler and type suggests they were lost together. Other finds in the area of the same period suggest there is 10th to early 11th century activity on this site but were not sufficiently clearly associated with this find in terms of findspot to be considered associa…

Early Medieval hoard of 35 base silver and copper alloy hammered coins. The preliminary assessment of the material by Eden Heritage has identified the coins as mainly comprising Anglo-Saxon styca, which were small coins minted in pre-Viking Northumbria. Several coins bear +EDILRED on the obverse, with a cross in the centre relating to the Anglo-Saxon Kings of Northumbria, namely Aethelred (841 to 850 AD).
Dimensions: Individual coins diameters range from 12mm to 15mm, weights up to 1g each, total weight 20g.

Description: Four Anglo-Saxon pennies, all portrait types of Edward the Elder, found in the same spot and clearly addenda to a hoard of three coins found in 2014 (NMS-88D191, 2014T769). Two were found on 20th December 2019; two more were found on 25th April 2021. One of the 2021 coins is an unusual variant with a right-facing bust. Two Early Medieval gold tremisses dating between the sixth and seventh century. One Early Medieval spearhead possibly dating between the fifth and sixth centuries but possibly even later.
Spearhead - An early medieval iron spearhead with a split socket. The blade is corroded but stable, long and tapers towards the tip, which is bent back to form a C-shaped bend. It is unclear if this is deliberate or caused by damage. There is a central midrib feature visible on both sides of the blade (particularly at the widest point), and runs throughout the length of the blade from tip to socket. …

Description: Hoard of three silver ingots or hacksilver fragments.
1. Long, slim rectangular ingot, all faces fairly flat but slightly undulating. It is rectangular in cross-section, and has a dark grey patina with hints of green corrosion. There are no nicks or testing marks. Two of the long arrises are slightly rounded and may be hammered, although it is also possible that the ingot has become worn and battered after deposition. It narrows at one end (which appears to be original) measuring 7.0 x 4.9mm in cross-section. The other end is more granular, and (a…
