Items Discovered 1. The sword blade fragment is a short length of blade weighing 11.52 grammes; the lentoid midrib is demarcated by two grooves. Analysis of the metal indicates that it is bronze. Swords like this are known as Carp's Tongue swords because the shape of the blade tip is said to resemble the tongue of that fish. Few complete Carp's Tongue swords are known in Britain. Most specimens consist of scrap fragments imported in that form from the mainland of Europe (Sealey 19915,7 with refs). They were current in the Ewart Park phase of the late Bronze Age dated c.1020…

Condition of the Metalwork To a greater or lesser extent, all the items in the hoard have a brown staining, presumably caused by iron-rich minerals percolating through the soil. In parts of Essex this process created the indurated conglomerate used as a building material in churches (Turner 1988). It is evident from this homogeno…

This record forms a summary of the material from the Burnham Hoard, and details of the discover are below. A note on the catalogue numbers: The letter prefix denotes the area designated the finders when they originally plotted the area of the find. These numbers were also used for the excavated material for consistency. A double suffix, e.g. 'AA' was used due to initial separating out casting debris from artefacts. The numerical suffix is the order in which the finds …
