Post-medieval coin hoard from Newton-with-Scales, Lancashire (2004T30) I have examined a group of coins reported found at Newton with Scales in January 2004. The coins are all official English issues of the traditional sterling standard, i.e. 92/5% fine metal. The coins consist of three denominations: 11 groats (fourpences) of Mary and Elizabeth Tudor, and a sixpence and 7 threepences of Elizabeth, amounting to a sum with a face value of five shillings and fivepence, which would be something like £20-30 in modern terms. The coins would certainly have circulated together, and the lim…

Hoard of eight leaded copper alloy discs. Some of the discs are slightly concave. Their thinness suggests that they are probably 17th century tokens. There are no details visible on the discs. Dimesions: 7 discs = 17-19mm diameter 1 disc = 13mm diameter.

Treasure case: 2008 T201 - disclaimed, returned to finder Hoard of five coins 3 of Elizabeth I, 1 of Charles I and 1 of the Commonwealth period (each recorded seperately, see linked records for details). Discussion (from Treasure report) These five silver coins were found in close proximity to one another, in an area that produced few other finds, and are all silver coins that would have been in circulation at the same time. The worn conditions of the Elizabeth coins supports the suggestion that they were deposited at the same time as the less worn commonwealth and Chares I coins. T…

two coins reported found in close proximity at Appletreewick, North Yorkshire. Both are official English silver coins, and will thus have a fineness of the sterling standard, 92.5% good silver. Their details are as follows: 1. Silver sixpence of Elizabeth I, initial mark ermine, dated 1571 Wt: 2.08g 2. Silver shilling of Charles I, initial mark illegible, but Group D with no inner circles, so datable to 1634-8 Wt: 4.42g Both coins are severely worn and probably clipped and their weight is very poor, especially the shilling. It is likely that both were in circulation together in the mi…

Early Post-Medieval lump of at least seven partially melted silver coins. Only the reverse of the uppermost coin is apparent, this appears to be an oval garnished shield of arms as found on some halfcrowns of Charles I. The small number of coins present suggests that they are most probably of a high denomination, perhaps halfcrowns, one could even be a crown. The melting down of higher value coins of Charles I suggests that the coin lump may well represent some illicit Civil War activity.

A group of ten post-medieval Nuremberg copper-alloy jettons all of the 'Rose / orb' type probably deposited in the early 17th century all in the same hole; no traces of a container have been discovered. They can be divided into two groups twice, along different lines: The first grouping is chronological: three unsigned jettons possibly attributable to the early Schultes dynasty (c. 1553 - c. 1603 AD), seven jettons of Hans Krauwinckel II (fl. 1586-1635 AD). The second grouping is by size: four jettons c. 23mm in diameter (the three unsigned examples and one of…

A hoard of 17 coins, 10 of which are gold and 7 of which are silver, of various denominations, issue, and date. Details are in the attached catalogue. The vessel is a Bartmann jug of the Frechen ceramic industry (Rhineland, Germany), of a form dating to 1551-1700. The vessel is 134mm in height and bears the distinctive mottled brown glaze of the kilns of Frechen. Notably, the jug bears evidence for a missing oval boss fixed to the body opposite the handle. The hoard was probably deposited soon after 1562, based on the date of the latest coin and the degree of wear visible. This da…
