A large panel of leather, possibly a panel from a military tent dating to the Roman period. Neither Philippa Walton or Hella Eckardt have seen the leatherwork as it was taken immediately to storage at Vindolanda. We do not currently have the dimensions of the piece, but will update this record whem Durham Archaeology Museum takes possession of the find. See van Driel Murray 1993, 1-75 for more detail on military tent panels.

An incomplete cowhide shoe, possibly a military boot dating to the late second or early third century AD. The shoe has been designed to be worn on the left foot. The shoe is swayed and very pointed. The toe turns noticeably inward. The toe is very pointed and tapers to the tread of the foot. The waist and seat are almost straight, with little variation in width. A single line of studs runs around the outer edge of the shoe, with four straight lines in the tread down to the waist. There is a single line in the waist towards the outer edge, but otherwise the waist is open and free of st…

An incomplete cowhide leather sandal dating to first half of the third century AD. The sole of the sandal survives with two thick sole layers held together by iron studs. Intended for wear on the left foot, it has a large flat toe box and rounded heel. It possesses a swayed shoe shape, which is narrowest in the waist (centre of foot, under arch). The toe is flat across the top with a slight protrusion at the big toe. The cut for the thong of the sandal is still present in the upper part of the insole. This would have held the thong to the shoe and supported the foot over the toes and …

An incomplete cowhide leather shoe with iron hobnails and some associated goatskin fragments dating to the late second or early third century AD. The shoe was designed to be worn on the right foot. The shoe is swayed with a rounded toe and pronounced outer side of the tread at the ball of the foot. The waist and seat are narrow, tapering evenly to the back of the shoe. Some uppers remain around the edges of the shoe, but not enough to discern the original shoe type. The heel stiffener is typical of closed Roman shoes of many types. The studs are very small and in a highly decorative p…

A fragment of leather shoe sole dating to the very late Post-Medieval and into the early Modern period. Probably incomplete at both ends, the length of the fragment is 79.5mm. One edge is probably complete the other edge is missing, the current maximum width is 39.1mm. At least two layers of leather, possibly three, are held together with a double row of copper-alloy rivets giving a current maximum thickness of 14.0mm. These pin like rivets are set in from the complete edge by 6.6mm. The rivet heads are flat or flattened-dome topped with a diameter of c.2.8mm. The double row is arrang…

Post-medieval assortment of concealed items. This collection of concealed items was found within a section of cob-wall above the doorway of a Topsham townhouse. The collection includes three shoe fragments, shells and pebbles, pieces of clay pipe, bone, oyster shell, slag, coal, fragments of south Somerset Donyatt Ware, and a fragment of glass. The practise of placing a shoe within the structure of the walls, particularly over doorways or inside chimneys, was common in 16th and 17th century house building. As was the practise of concealing elaborate artefacts, or multiple as…

A group of fragments from two modern shoes, probably dating to c. AD 1800-1900. Two of the fragments may have originally been joined, the other two are different, and seem likely to represent a second or possibly third individual shoe. Three of the four pieces bear iron nails ringing their perimeter. The two adjoining pieces have smaller round headed nails, while the third piece has more squared off nails and is more rectangular in size. The third fragment bears no nails and is warped and damaged. There are skeuomorphic patches of green on the brownish leather of the soles, which…

A post-medieval (late 18th century) shoe found during renovation work in the service wing of Aldham Hall. The shoe was found with a witch-bottle (ESS-A06743) and is believed to be associated with witch-craft. The shoe is made of hobnailed brown leather with buckle straps, but with the buckle now missing, a low stacked heel and characteristic pointed toe. It measures 270mm long and therefore was worn by an adult. The shoe (plus the witch-bottle) appears to have been placed within a void between two internal walls, behind a chimneybreast. An old shoe was commonly believed in the 17th an…

Fragment of a leather shoe dating from the Medieval to Post Medieval periods. The fragment is part of the sole of the shoe and is narrow (73.25mm in width), possibly indicating that it is from a child's shoe. The outer edges bear stitch holes, now broken into a continous and uneven hole. The toe and heel sections of the sole are missing due to old breaks and the sides of the shoe also do not survive. Dimensions: length: 58.7mm; width: 73.25mm; weight: 12.12g.

Fragment of a leather shoe dating from the Medieval to Post Medieval periods. The fragment is part of the sole of the shoe and is from the heel. The outer edges bear stitch holes, irregularly spaced. Eleven deteriorating fragments of a leather shoe found in a wall at Collfryn, Bethesda Bach. Child’s shoe with oval toe, probably dating to the 16th or 17th century. Evidence of stitches visible on the base of the sole, the quarters and the vamp. The long, narrow sections appear to be the remains of the rand. It is likely that the shoe was made of welted construction, possibly on a straight last. The shoe is in poor condition: all sections are dry and brittle, and several seem to also have mould on the surface. Dimensions given below relate to the sole.

A leather shoe upper, or vamp, possibly of Post Medieval date (c.1600-1800). The toe is rounded, and its shape suggests it was for the right foot. Where the vamp joined the quarters is a double and parallel line of stitch holes, with a single line of stitch holes following the cut-out section across the bridge of the foot. A deep crease on the right side and a continuous crease from right to left across the bridge, are evidence of use wear. Damage, including a hole in the centre of the bridge and creases at the toe, may be historic. Unstratified leather shoes are difficult to d…

The piece forms the heel and sides of the shoe, with a single line of stitch marks along the seams with the sole and the vamp. The left side is longer than the right and the end is missing.
