A cast copper alloy awl of uncertain date. The awl has a 32mm long circular sectioned tapering point that narrows into a bent square sectioned tang 2.3mm thick which flattens slightly towards the end. The awl has a black patina and a pitted surface. Awls are difficult to date out of context, and this example could date from the Bronze Age right up to the Medieval period. If the awl is roman, it could be classified as a Manning’s (1985) Type 4b.
