An incomplete, very worn medieval silver penny of Richard II (1377-99), Type 1B (North 1329b), mint: York. Ref: North 1991: 63; Purvey 1962: p.91, cf. pl.VI no. 22. The obverse bust has a small pellet above the shoulders and (possibly) a cross on the breast. A saltire appears to be present at the beginning of the reverse legend before CIVI, and a pellet before EBO; an extra pellet is seen in quarter 3 under the B of EBO. The reverse includes a quatrefoil with central pellet in the centre of the long cross with three pellets in each quarter. There is a small annulet in the centre of the pellets in one quarter. The coin was minted at York. The coin has a diameter of 16.9 mm, is 0.6 mm thick and weighs 0.8 g. It is possible the coin is a mule of Class 9b and Class 10, as it is of York archiepiscopal mint of Class 9b with quatrefoil on the reverse. However, the crown has bifoliate side fleurs, as Class 10 and Class 9b should have trifoliate side fleurs. cf. North (1991) Vol 2. No. 1037/1 (b)The coin is also heavily clipped and damaged.
