Cast copper alloy belt loop, length 17mm, width 22mm thickness 3mm, weight 1.71g. Asymmetrical frame, the forward edge is oval whilst the rear edge is rectangular, both are separated by two inward facing lugs. The oval edge is wider and thicker than the rectangular one (oval, width 22mm, thickness 3mm, rectangular width 19mm, thickness1.5mm). The artefact appears to be made from gunmetal which is a lead rich copper alloy. The overall condition is poor with corrosion eating away at much of the surface resulting in a greyish/brown pitted layer. Date 1250-1450.

The object is a strap fitting, a decorative mount. It is made from cast copper alloy. In plan the mount is sub-circular, and in profile it is a sub-conical shape. The upper surface is decorated with a moulded design, consisting of a central low-relief pellet at the apex. This is within a high-relief ridge ring, and a second concentric low relief ring at the mid point. The reverse of the mount is undecorated and is hollow. There are two integral, oval sectioned studs which taper to a blunt point. One is bent towards the centre of the mount, the other is shortened and points away from th…

The object is probably a type of strap guide. It has three integral components, an upper small loop, a connecting block and a lower large loop. The upper small loop is rectangular in plan, with the two upper corners being rounded. The hole in the centre is circular and is 3.93mm wide. The edge of this hole has a small casting sprue, which may suggest the object has not been used particularly often. Below the hole, on the outer and side faces there is a horizontal ridge. The second component, the integral connecting block has moulded decoration. Firstly a narrowed rectangular sectioned…

The object is a probable strap slide of medieval date or mid 14th to 15th century. It is made of cast copper alloy. In plan the object is sub-rectangular with a central integral external rivet. In cross-section the slide frame is sub-rectangular and the rivet is sub-circular. As an example Egan (Egan, G and Pritchard, F. 1991 Medieval Finds From Excavations in London: 3. Dress Accessories c.1150 - c.1450, HMSO, London, Fig.147, no. 1236) illustrates a strap slide that is similar to, but smaller than the recorded object. According to Egan strap slides (or loops) were used to hold dow…

The object is possibly a cast copper alloy pendant-mount from a sword belt fitting. David Gaimster ( 1988 ‘Two post-medieval sword-belt fittings from Pyecombe, West Sussex’ p. 245ff. Post Medieval Archaeology) dates these to the mid 16th to early 17th centuries. If the object is not a sword belt fitting, the style of decoration and nature of the corrosion still suggests an early Post Medieval date. Another possible identification is a terminal of a spur, this seems unlikely due to the angle or the arm with the loops. The pendant mount hook is a sub-triangular shape in plan, w…

The object is probably a back plate of a sword belt fitting, which is made of cast copper alloy. Gaimster (1988 ‘Two post-medieval sword-belt fittings from Pyecombe, West Sussex’ p. 245ff. It has moulded edges as decoration, formed by horizontal curves forming steps towards the centre. Protruding from the centre of the lower edge is an integral sub-‘n’ shape which may have originally been a loop. B…

The strap fitting, a mount, probably dates to the late Medieval to early Post Medieval period, c. 1500 to 1700. The integral rivets, gilding and design suggest this date. The mount is made from cast copper alloy. In plan, the mount is a drop-shape with a sub-lis shaped tip and with a trefoil shaped knop protruding from the base. The mount is slightly domed in profile. The surface of the mount is decorated with annulets and short obliquely angled curve grooves. There are traces of gilding on this surface, particularly in the grooves of the decoration. The reverse is flat except fo…

The object is a cast copper alloy strap fitting. It probably dates to the late Iron Age to early Roman period. Jackson illustrates a similar type of fitting found at Camerton (No. 82) which he comments may relate to button-loop fasteners as described by Wild. The strap fitting has a pointed oval shape as the decorative element. This oval has a central circular hole. The sides of the frame are semi-circular in section. At the pointed terminals there is a subtle ridge as decoration. Protruding from the base, from each corner, is a rectangular shaped loop. The loop is perpendicula…

The object is strap mount, which is a sub-lozenge shape in plan. It is not known what type of strap the mount decorated, but may possibly be a personal belt. Margeson illustrates other shaped mounts (Nos. 281-285), which tend to date to the 15th to 16th century. The mount is made from cast copper alloy. The mount is an asymmetrical lozenge shape in plan, which has a low-relief border on the outer face. This is the only decoration. On the reverse the mount is slightly hollow and has two integral studs protruding. Both studs are circular in section, taper to a point and are…

The object is probably a Medieval strap fitting. The strap fitting is suggested by the two parallel bars which show signs of wear on the edges. This may have been a personal adornment rather than a harness fitting due to its quite insubstantial nature. The style of the bust is not Roman and the Early Medieval period does not commonly use human busts as a form of decoration whereas the Medieval period does. It is made from cast copper alloy. The fitting forms a sub ‘L’ shape in profile. The horizontal portion is a tube with openwork areas. One terminal is a semi-circular shape…

The object is possibly a strap fitting. It is made from cast copper alloy, and may date to the Roman or Medieval periods. The stud fitting is reminiscent of a Roman tie ring of a lorica segmentata (Zeinkiewicz 1986; No. 29-30) or Medieval oval strap loops (Egan 2002; 1230). The body of the object is a conical shape, which is oval shaped in section. The sides are slightly convex in plan. The blunt tip is a broken edge, which maybe a recent break. The body is decorated by a single linear groove towards the lower edge. The lower edge appears to be damaged slightly, as on opposite …

The object is probably a cast copper alloy pendant-mount hook of a sword belt fitting. Gaimster dates these to the mid 16th to early 17th centuries. The pendant mount hook is a sub-triangular shape in plan, with moulded curvaceous sides. The upper portion of the mount narrows to form a sub-rectangular protrusion with a broken terminal. The terminal originally would have formed the hook. The break is not a recent break. The outer surface of the pendant is decorated with a scroll and lis design, which in the low relief areas has traces of a black coating. The body of the mount has …

The object is possibly a harness fitting, but certainly a strap fitting, made from cast copper alloy. The date is not certain, but the object is reminiscent of 11th century harness fittings, such as stirrup mounts and cheek-pieces. The body of the object is a hollow conical with three pairs of sub-oval voids. The spacing between the pairs of voids, leaves one face blank. The voids are not symmetrical which mirrors the openwork decoration on stirrup mounts. The base also has a circular hole. All of the voids/holes do not show any trace of wear. Towards the tip of the conical body the…

The strap fitting is a mount. Egan and Pritchard describe these types of mounts as 'Bar-Mount with Pendent Loop' (Nos. 1189-1193) and date them to the late 14th century. They were used, possibly to hang keys or a purse from. The mount has an asymmetrical 'U' shape in section. The front plate is a vertical rectangular bar. This bar has a central curved rib with a flat flange either side. The upper edge of the bar is abraded. Protruding from the lower edge of the bar, and is narrowed, is the curved 'U' shaped component from which the loop is suspended. This leads to the plate of the m…
