An incomplete copper alloy Post Medieval spur (c. AD 1600-1750). The rowel is missing. The gap between the terminals is 68.32mm and each terminal consists of a figure-of-eight double off-set loop that joins the arm at a moulded collar. The moulded collar is more pronounced on the right arm than the left arm. The main body of the frame is plano-convex, with a flat reverse and rounded front, giving the main body of the frame a D-shaped cross section. The main body starts off with a band width of 4.92mm and thickness of 2.48mm on the left-hand side, and a band width of 6.3…

The heel of the object has a flat internal face and domed external face, giving it a D-shaped cross section. One the one side, the heel tapers from being 18.72mm high and 4.44mm thick near the neck of the rowel box to 11.32mm high and 2.84mm thick near the broken terminal on one of the arms - the terminal starts off with a sub-triangular projection connected to two lozenges, ending wit…

It has a semi-circular cross section and tapers from 10.98mm wide and 3.82mm thick just before the break to 5.28mm wide and 2.65mm thick before the loops at the terminal. The loops are both circular and arranged in a figure of eight that is 12.29mm wide and 2.64mm thick. A short section of the edge of one loop is missing from around 1 o'clock to 3 o'clock, though the loop is not broken. There is an initial bend in the spur, with the …

A complete copper alloy star rowel from a rowel spur, of Medieval dating (AD 1200 to AD 1500). The star rowel has eight points. Each point is sub-lozenge shaped, with one end, broadly rectangular/square in section, being joined to the centre of the rowel and the other end, circular in section, tapering to a point. In the centre of the rowel is a hole (internal diameter 2.4 mm) through which a rivet would have passed, securing the rowel to the rowel box. The star rowel has traces of gilding between the points. The rowel has a diameter of 25.0 mm and is 2.8 mm thick. It weighs …

An Incomplete copper alloy rowel spur, possibly dating from AD 1200 to 1500. The fragment is curved and would possibly have been u-shaped in plan. Most of the sides have been broken off. The slightly longer left hand side is bent upwards. The neck protrudes from the centre and the rowel box has broken off approximately 1cm from the frame. The rowel box is present and is a rounded, by pyramidal shape with a groove running down the centre. This groove would have held the rowel. The object has a mid to dark grey patina. The maximum width of the object is 59.31mm and length is 24.71. I…

A Post Medieval copper alloy spur fragment possibly dating to the 17th century. The spur is now incomplete and consists of the heel and incomplete arms. The breaks on the arms may have occurred in the plough soil. The arms have a 'D' shaped cross section, with a flat inner surface and convex outer surface. Integral to the exterior edge is a protrusion which originally held the rowel. The protrusion is broadly oval shaped in cross section at the collar which then narrows to a circular cross section and broken terminal. This projection extends to a length of 18.91 mm. The object has a …

A copper alloy arm fragment of a probable prick spur of the Medieval to Post Medieval period, probably dating from c. AD 1200 - c. AD 1650. The shaft of the fragment is D shaped in cross section, and has a worn break at its widest terminal. The patina has been lost from the front surface. The spur tapers towards its narrower terminal, and then expands into two conjoined loops, one to each side of the shaft. The loops both contain the remains of iron rivets, these have become heavily corroded. The reverse of these loops is flat, the front is convex, and the entire reverse is undecor…
