Two cast lead alloy shot of Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1700 - 1800). Both are broadly spherical and there is no evidence that it has been fired. The surfaces are even and a cream / light grey in colour.
Similar shot have been dated to the later Post-Medieval period however the date range should extend into the early modern period as similar projectiles were used in firearms throughout this period. This is possibly from an 18th century pistol.
The shot measures
i) 13.08mm in diameter and weighs 10.32grams.
ii) 11.72mm in diameter and weighs 8.65grams.

Lead shot. Cast dumbbell shot, probably for use with a carbine or pistol of military specification, comprising paired spherical balls joined by an integrally cast round section shank. There is no evidence of it being fired. It is thought that the doubled mass of the round would enhance its 'stopping power' in the event of a hit, though at an increased risk of fouling the gun barrel. The use of cast dumbbell shot is characteristic of English practice in the 17th century, while the pistol and carbine would be a weapon used by a cavalry trooper. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700.
