Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Worcestershire

A lead shot of Post-Medieval to Modern date, dating from AD 1600-1900.  The object is spherical with a cream to grey coloured surface patina.  The surface is abraded.  It is problematic to assign projectiles to specific calibres of firearm because most shot will have lost weight in the plough zone and there was a huge variety of firearms and they were also used in other machinery. Small musket balls in the 17th century weighed between 23-27 grams. However, it may have been used with later firearms. Reference: …

A single lead shot / pistol ball dating to the post medieval period (c.AD 1600 - 1800). The shot is spherical, with the exception of one slightly flattened face. It has a dark grey patina.  The surface is predominantly smooth but there are some areas of light corrosion. Measurements are diameter 14.8mm and weight 16.85g The weight of the shot is consistent with the less standardised 17th century weapons and is likely for use in a pistol which averaged at 16-19g per bullet. (Courtney (1988) and Foard (2008)

A Post Medieval iron object, possibly shot or a ball bearing. It weighs 3.57g, which is roughly 127 bore. This would mean that it could be a pellet from a shotgun, potentially from the 18th century or 19th century, or a ball bearing from the 19th century. There does not appear to be any signs of damage from being fired. The object is largely reddish brown in colour.
