A lead shot of Post-Medieval to Modern date, dating from AD 1600-1900.  The object is spherical with a cream to grey coloured surface patina.  The surface is abraded.  It is problematic to assign projectiles to specific calibres of firearm because most shot will have lost weight in the plough zone and there was a huge variety of firearms and they were also used in other machinery. Small musket balls in the 17th century weighed between 23-27 grams. However, it may have been used with later firearms. Reference: …

Lead shot. Cast dumbbell shot, probably for use with a carbine or pistol of military specification, comprising paired spherical balls joined by an integrally cast round section shank. There is no evidence of it being fired. It is thought that the doubled mass of the round would enhance its 'stopping power' in the event of a hit, though at an increased risk of fouling the gun barrel. The use of cast dumbbell shot is characteristic of English practice in the 17th century, while the pistol and carbine would be a weapon used by a cavalry trooper. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700. …
