Two cast lead alloy shot of Post-Medieval date (c. AD 1700 - 1800). Both are broadly spherical and there is no evidence that it has been fired. The surfaces are even and a cream / light grey in colour.
Similar shot have been dated to the later Post-Medieval period however the date range should extend into the early modern period as similar projectiles were used in firearms throughout this period. This is possibly from an 18th century pistol.
The shot measures
i) 13.08mm in diameter and weighs 10.32grams.
ii) 11.72mm in diameter and weighs 8.65grams.

Lead shot. Cast dumbbell shot, probably for use with a carbine or pistol of military specification, comprising paired spherical balls joined by an integrally cast round section shank. There is no evidence of it being fired. It is thought that the doubled mass of the round would enhance its 'stopping power' in the event of a hit, though at an increased risk of fouling the gun barrel. The use of cast dumbbell shot is characteristic of English practice in the 17th century, while the pistol and carbine would be a weapon used by a cavalry trooper. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700.

A cast lead alloy shot / ball for use as Buckshot of post medieval date (AD1600-1800). The shot is spherical with a relatively well formed surface patina. The shot is relatively round suggesting that it has not been fired. The colour of the ball is a cream / white. There is some small surface damage, probably caused by agricultural machinery
Similar shot have been dated to the later post medieval period however the date range should extend into the early modern period as similar projectiles were used in firearms throughout this period. Three lead alloy shots, probably from a small musket of Post Medieval dating circa AD 1600-1800.
This shot has light brown to cream coloured with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail. There is a casting sprue visible.
It has a diameter of 19.52 mm and weighs 35.1 grams.
2. This lead shot is broadly spherical in shape. It is brown to cream in colour with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.
It has a diameter of 21.48 mm and weighs 42.1 grams.

A cast lead alloy shot / ball for use in a Pistol of post medieval date (AD1600-1800). The shot is spherical with a relatively well formed surface patina. The shot is relatively round and smooth - suggesting that it has not been fired. There is a sprue scar with two facets where the casting sprue was probably cut with nippers. The colour of the ball is a pale brown / grey. It shows some signs of damage, probably caused by agricultural machinery. There is some delamination on the surface of the shot.
Similar shot have been dated to the later post medieval period however the date range should extend into the early modern period as similar projectiles were used in firearms throughout this period. The context of this find / assemblage would indicate a date in the English civil war. Musket balls are discussed in Courtney's "Small Arms Accessories of the Mid-Seventeenth Century" (1988) and on page 202 of "Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition" by Geoff Egan (2005).
Diameter: 13.1mm Weight: 11.3g
The weight suggests it was for use in a Pistol (Harding 2012, Lead Shot of the English Civil War)
