Lead shot. Cast dumbbell shot, probably for use with a carbine or pistol of military specification, comprising paired spherical balls joined by an integrally cast round section shank. There is no evidence of it being fired. It is thought that the doubled mass of the round would enhance its 'stopping power' in the event of a hit, though at an increased risk of fouling the gun barrel. The use of cast dumbbell shot is characteristic of English practice in the 17th century, while the pistol and carbine would be a weapon used by a cavalry trooper. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700. …

Two lead alloy shots, one probably from a Carbine and one from a Pistol of Post Medieval dating circa AD 1600-1800. 1. This shot is probably for a Carbine and is spherical in form. Carbine shots usually weigh between 16 - 23 grams. One side of the shot has been flattened. The shot has a flattened cylindrical band around the circumference suggesting it has been fired. It is light brown to cream coloured with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in the loss of some of the original surface. It has a diameter of 14.26 mm

A cast lead alloy shot / ball for use in a Pistol of post medieval date (AD1600-1800). The shot is spherical with a relatively well formed surface patina. The shot is relatively round and smooth - suggesting that it has not been fired. There is a sprue scar with two facets where the casting sprue was probably cut with nippers. The colour of the ball is a pale brown / grey. It shows some signs of damage, probably caused by agricultural machinery. There is some delamination on the surface of the shot. Similar shot have been dated to the later post medieval period however the …
