Lead, or lead alloy, waste 'header' from casting shot. The length of the header is sub-rectangular in plan with a rounded terminal one and a broken edge the other. The break does not appear to be recent. The upper face of the header is undecorated and almost flat. The underside has three runners, two of which has shot still attached. The shot is 11.5mm diameter. And has a visible casting seam on each. The surface of the lead or lead alloy has a shiny mid mottled grey. The header and shot measure 41.31mm long, 18.13mm wide and 14.96mm thick from the top of the header to the base of the…

An irregular spherical shaped piece of iron shot / small cannon ball probably of post medieval / civil war date (1600-1700 AD). The ball is of a mid-brown purplish colour with small areas of flaking and active corrosion. The shot is in fairly good condition and with no obvious dents or grazes which might suggest use. The size is small either suggesting it was used as grape shot or that it was for a small hand-held cannon (possibly a rabinet (1inch bore) or serpentine (1 ½ inch bore). The diameter of the ball is unknown due to corrosion. The shot is sub-spherical with a diameter of …

A lead alloy shot / ball of probable post medieval or early modern date (1600-1800 AD). Due to the size and weight the ball is most likely to be from a pistol. The shot is sub spherical in shape with an uneven surface and a clear casting seam from the mould is present; there is no evidence of the shot having been fired. It is a mid-grey colour with an abraded patina. Similar shot has been dated to the later post medieval period however the date range should extend into the early modern period as similar projectiles were used in firearms throughout this period. Musket balls are discuss…

A cast lead alloy shot / ball for use in a Pistol of post medieval date (AD1600-1800). The shot is spherical with a relatively well formed surface patina. The shot is relatively round and smooth - suggesting that it has not been fired. There is a sprue scar with one sloping facet, where the casting sprue was probably cut with a knife. The colour of the ball is a pale grey. There is no delamination of the surface, and the casting seam is no longer visible, but the surface has lots of scarring - possible bite marks. Similar shot have been dated to the later post medieval period howev…
