The shot is sub spherical in shape with an uneven surface and a clear casting seam from the mould is present; there is no evidence of the shot having been fired. It is a mid-grey colour with an abraded patina. Similar shot has been dated to the later post medieval period however the date range should extend into the early modern period as similar projectiles were used in firearms throughout this period. Lead shot. Cast dumbbell shot, probably for use with a carbine or pistol of military specification, comprising paired spherical balls joined by an integrally cast round section shank. There is no evidence of it being fired. It is thought that the doubled mass of the round would enhance its 'stopping power' in the event of a hit, though at an increased risk of fouling the gun barrel. The use of cast dumbbell shot is characteristic of English practice in the 17th century, while the pistol and carbine would be a weapon used by a cavalry trooper. A cast lead alloy shot / ball for use in a Pistol of post medieval date (AD1600-1800). The shot is spherical with a relatively well formed surface patina. The shot is relatively round and smooth - suggesting that it has not been fired. There is no sprue scar or casting seam present. The colour of the ball is a pale grey / white. There is some surface damage, probably caused by biting and from contact with agricultural machinery.
