Lead shot. Cast dumbbell shot, probably for use with a carbine or pistol of military specification, comprising paired spherical balls joined by an integrally cast round section shank. There is no evidence of it being fired. It is thought that the doubled mass of the round would enhance its 'stopping power' in the event of a hit, though at an increased risk of fouling the gun barrel. The use of cast dumbbell shot is characteristic of English practice in the 17th century, while the pistol and carbine would be a weapon used by a cavalry trooper. A group of six lead shots dating to the Post Medieval period (c. AD 1600-1800). The objects are spherical in shape and do not appear to have been fired. Casting seams can be identified around the circumference of at least four of the shots. The objects are light to dark grey in colour and range in size from circa 18mm in diameter to 23mm in diameter.
