Lead shot. Cast dumbbell shot, probably for use with a carbine or pistol of military specification, comprising paired spherical balls joined by an integrally cast round section shank. There is no evidence of it being fired. It is thought that the doubled mass of the round would enhance its 'stopping power' in the event of a hit, though at an increased risk of fouling the gun barrel. The use of cast dumbbell shot is characteristic of English practice in the 17th century, while the pistol and carbine would be a weapon used by a cavalry trooper. An incomplete lead capstan or 'bobbin' shot dating to the Post Medieval period (c.AD 1600-1800). The object is roughly hourglass shaped and circular in section, with a wider flattened top and bottom and a waisted middle section. The object has a white patina and shows signs of chipping around the upper and lower edges. For a comparable example see PAS record LVPL-95898A, where it is stated that these elongated forms of shot were designed to provide increased power. The dimensions are as follows: 15mm in length, 12 mm in diameter and 14g in weight.
