Medieval (13th to 14th century) impersonal seal matrix: The copper alloy seal matrix has an oval die, with a tapering handle. The handle has a hexagonal cross section, and terminates with a trefoil suspension loop, which has a collar beneath. There are no marks on either of the six sides to aid orientation during use. The die depicts a standing female figure on the left of the impresseion. The figure is wearing headwear with is possibly a crown with flaring sides and a central stem. Medieval seal matrix, (c.1200 - c.1400): An incomplete circular lead or lead alloy seal matrix. The matrix is slightly crumpled and c. 20% is missing leaving a ragged and possibly torn edge. This edge has the same surface as the rest of the matrix, which is an oxidised cream colour, implying the damage was not recent. The matrix is a flat-backed type with no evidence of a lug, which may have been on the missing section. The underside of the matrix has a legend and central device. The edges also suggest the matrix is composed of two plates joined together, there is a crack which runs around the edge of the matrix. On the back there is an integral lug at the end where the legend starts. The device on the die of the matrix is indistinguishable due to wear, and likewise the legend. The surface of the matrix has a shiny light brown coloured patina. The matrix measures 39.3mm long, 23.72mm wide 6.09mm thick and weighs 21.38g.

A Medieval copper alloy seal matrix dating from the13th-14th century AD. The seal matrix is in the form of a flat pointed oval with a perforated lug on the reverse. The central motif appears to be a stylised fleur-de-lys with surrounding legend reading + S' IOhANE DE EST.. (Seal of Joan of East..; the final letter cannot be read). The matrix is thick and the edges appear eroded. The length is 28mm, the width is 30mm and thickness 13mm. Similar to GLO-4ADA38, BERK-A2AFA3 and BERK-4347F2. Women's seals represent about 20% of all readable named seal matrices on the PAS database.
