A cast copper-alloy seal matrix of medieval date. The seal matrix is hexagonal in shape and is flat with a central pierced rib terminating in a lug on the reverse. The front has a central device representing a pair of clasped hands, above which (or below, depending on which way it is held) there is a fleur-de-lis. The device is set within a hexagonal border. Around this border a legend is arranged. This begins with a star and appears to read S'ROB'T DE LYE, which translates as Seal of Robert of Lye. This may be an alternative spelling of the modern Leigh, as this is near to where the …

The object represents the missing handle from the late 17th century seal matrix previously found on the site by Mr Barlow (Treasure case 2005 T16, Treasure Annual Report 2005-6, Item 806). An examination of the two parts shows that they join perfectly along a hackly fracture line leaving no doubt that they are parts of the same silver matrix.

A Medieval seal matrix. The matrix is a pyramid type, made from cast copper alloy and then it has been engraved. In plan the matrix base is an incomplete oval due to a break. The break is worn and has the same surface as the rest of the matrix and therefore it is not a recent break. The reverse of the matrix has a hexagonal sectioned stem which terminates with horizontal collar and a broken edge. Again the break is not recent. The underside of the matrix has a legend and central device. The legend reads 'SANTV[ ] RVS' which probably is reading 'Saint Paul'. The device is St. Paul hold…

A copper alloy seal matrix, probably of post-medieval date. The matrix is flat and circular. The reverse is flat and undecorated, and has rounded edges. The underside of the matrix has a legend and central device. The device appears to be a lion rather than a dog, with a long tail, and a possible mane. The face of the lion is quite bulbous. The lion has caught a deer or dog between its front paws, this animal is more lightly engraved and is set parallel to, and below, the lion. The device seems to be either worn, or more likely not well made. The legend is written between beade…

A personal Medieval seal matrix. The matrix is a flat-baked type made from cast lead or lead alloy.
