Medieval (c. 1350 to c. 1500) spur rowel: The copper alloy rowel is in the shape of a 14-pointed star with a sub-circular perforation in the centre. The arms are a pointed oval in section and plan with moulded definition on the lower half of each arm. The rowel is slightly abraded with an incomplete dark green patina. It measures 48.57mm diameter, 3.33mm thick, and weighs 19.56g. Ward-Perkins (1940) illustrates similar rowel spurs (Figure 32 Nos. 3 and 4) and comments that the many pointed wheels were popular from the mid-14th century. Post Medieval spur rowel: The copper alloy rowel is in the shape of a seven-pointed star. The arms are sub-oval in section with angular corners. Two opposing arms are leaning, with one edge being convex the other concave. The faces of the arms have feint transverse ridges as decoration. There is a central circular perforation. The rowel is slightly abraded with traces of a mid green patina. It measures 22.49mm diameter, 2.65mm thick, and weighs 2.87g.
