A copper alloy late Medieval to Post Medieval suspension loop from a purse (c. AD 1450-1600). The object has a D-shaped loop with an integral triple collar at the base. Extending from this collar is an oval-sectioned shank that terminates in a flattened base slightly wider than the width of the shank. Around the shank is a loose ring, presumably part of the purse bar attachment. There are no decorative features apparent on the object. The object has a light green patina. For a comparable example recorded on the PAS database see SWYOR-E8D34E. The overall dimensions are as fol…

Medieval to Post Medieval (late 15th to early 16th centuries) purse bar fragment; the remaining purse bar is composed one arm and a trace of a central block. The arm is circular in section and terminated with a large bulbous knop which has a linear groove across the centre. The other terminal of the arm protrudes from an symmetrical rectangular block which has a crescent shaped section. This block originally would have been rectangular with a vertical perforation to enable the loop of the purse bar to swivel, but this element is missing. The purse bar is slightly abraded and has l…

An incomplete copper alloy purse bar, of Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (c. AD 1450 - AD 1550). Less than 50% of the purse bar is present, with parts of each arm and the central lozenge present. Both arms are incomplete, but have a circular cross section. At the centre of the bar (where the two arms meet) is an integrally sub-rectangular lozenge, through which a vertical hole has been cut. This hole enables the suspension loop of the purse to rotate. No decoration is visible on either side of the lozenge. The purse bar measures 12.5 mm in length, 32.0 mm wide and…

Cast copper alloy purse bar dating from the late medieval or early post-medieval period, that is c. AD1450-1550. Ward Perkins Class A1. What remains of the purse frame is only the bar; the lower part of the frame and purse have broken off. The horizontal bar, however, is nearly complete with only the separate suspension loop missing. The bar is circular in cross-section and is decorated with what looks like a double strand lattice flanked to either end with a single groove. Both ends have terminal knops from which the lower part of the frame would have been suspended. On both the low…

The bar is irregular in plan and is sub rectangular in section. The suspension loop is quatrefoil shaped with a quatrefoil perforation in the centre. There are small incised grooves at each of the tressures of the quatrefoil. The terminal ends in a ridge which then tapers out to where it meets the bar. Below this the shank is obscurred by the bar, the shank would pass through a circular perforation in the centre of the bar, and is held in place by…

The object is possibly a swivel loop of a purse bar frame. Similar shaped loops on purse bar frames are illustrated in Margeson’s (1993) Norwich Households; Medieval and Post Medieval Finds from Norwich Survey Excavations 1971-78. East Anglian Archaeology Report No. 58, page 42 No. 291 and in the London Museum Catalogue pages 158ff. The metal purse bars tend to date to the late 15th to mid 16th centuries. The recorded loop is a similar shape in plan to these examples and have the same swivel terminal. However the recorded example in profile is quite wide and possibly cumbersome if at…
