Copper alloy lace end / lace tage / lace chape of Post Medieval date (AD 1600-1750). It is formed from a rectangle of rolled copper alloy sheet to form a tubular slightly tapering cylindrical cap or chape. The seam has five teeth on either side and runs vertcially down the reverse, and an indented vertical line running down its opposite side. There are two small pointed prongs at the base of the chape. There is remains of a white organic material, possibly wool, within the tag. There is no evidence of a hole to secure the chape to the lace. It has a m…

An incomplete copper alloy object, likely a Medieval or post Medieval lace tag (AD 1300-1800) though potentially also a modern paintbrush ferrule from the 19th or 20th centuries. It is made from a rolled copper alloy sheet forming a tubular body with a straight edge to the edge seam. There is no closure at the narrow end, whilst there is also damage at the wider end, with a triangular segment of around ¼ of the circumference and 10.75mm long missing (roughly 21.78mm²). Due to the lack of securing rivet holes on the body of the tag, it raises the possibility that it is a ferrule…

An incomplete copper alloy lace chape or lace tag dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1350-1450). The object is constructed from a sheet of copper alloy folded to form a tapering tube. A further tube has been affixed over the lower end of the original as a possible repair. Both the original chape and the repair have two rivet holes opposite each other near the wider end. Some textile material has been retained with the void of the chape. The opening has been chipped and the object has a mid-green patina. As discussed by Egan and Pritchard (2002: 281) lace chapes or lace tags were…

Post Medieval to Modern (c. 1600 - 1800) copper alloy ferrule or lace tag: The ferrule is cylindrical in plan tapering to a turned knop at the base. The upper part is formed from sheet metal and is hollow, the lower knop is cast solid. Through the outer edge are two equally sized circular holes (diameter 2.2mm) which are aligned with one another, presumably to take a fixing (now not present). The ferrule has a mid-green coloured patina. It measures 19.37mm length is 8mm diameter at top and 5.77mm at the base across knop. The sheet metal is 0.54mm thick and the artefact weighs 1.79g…

The surface has traces of a green/brown coloured patina otherwise the surface is abraded. It measures 67.92mm long, 6.86mm wide and weighs 7.2g (note the tag is filled with soil). Margeson (1993) illustrates similar examples, 121-123 and dates them to the 14th to 17th century. Margeson, S.1993. A copper alloy lace tag made of a sub-rectangular shaped piece of copper alloy sheet. This has been curled forming a circular hollow with an edge to edge seam. The lace tag tapers slightly to a broken asymmetrical edge. There are small areas of openwork which is difficult to tell whether they are due to corrosion or perforation. The surface of the lace tag has a well developed shiny mid grey/green patina. The lace tag measures 53.27mm long, 8.51mm wide and 7.39mm thick. It weighs 5.8g. Lace tags are also known as lace chapes, pointes, were used on the end of leather or textile laces…
