The object is sub-triangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. At the top of the plate, there are two attachment loops that are sub-rectangular in plan and sub-triangular to sub-rectangular in cross section and which appear to have been formed by bending the projections back upon themselves. A heavily corroded copper alloy book clasp. This example is rectangular in plan with an expanded butt; the forward edge has a narrowed tab that has been bent around to form a hook. There is a rivet hole at the front and a second at the rear, the latter still retains its copper alloy rivet, which has a decorated rose shaped head. Artefacts such as this have been discovered during excavation in York which dated to the 15th and 16th centuries (Ottaway & Rogers, 2002, 2937-2939)

An incomplete sheet copper alloy hooked artefact, probably a book clasp of Post-Medieval or Modern date (AD 1700 - AD 1850). The artefact is cruciform in plan. Three of the arms have tri-lobed terminals with a single rivet hole in the centre of each, one is incomplete. The fourth arm is longer and parallel sided. This arm is bent rearwards through 180° to form a clip. The extreme end of the clip narrows and then points to the rear. It measures 37.3 mm in length, 30.7 mm wide and 7.3 mm thick.
