It is circular in section and has a light-cream to grey coloured patina. A similar pencil is recorded under HAMP-C8365B which notes: Dr Helen Geake of the Portable Antiquities Scheme has commented: "The use of lead pencils is still not really understood. At Winchester they are found mainly in 13th or 14th-century contexts, and it was thought some years ago that when graphite was discovered i…

A lead shot of Post-Medieval to Modern date, dating from AD 1600-1900.  The object is spherical with a cream to grey coloured surface patina.  The surface is abraded.  It is problematic to assign projectiles to specific calibres of firearm because most shot will have lost weight in the plough zone and there was a huge variety of firearms and they were also used in other machinery. Small musket balls in the 17th century weighed between 23-27 grams. However, it may have been used with later firearms. Reference: …

A cast, multi-facted domed object, possibly a lead alloy pin head of Early Medieval to Post Medieval date (c. AD 750-1800). The object is made from a dark grey material, with some dark brown and cream coloured sections, which would suggest that this is possibly made from a lead alloy. The object is roughly pyramidal, with four sub-oval faces and a sub-oval, curved base. There is no scar from a stem, though it is of a similar shape to other objects recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database as pin heads, including NARC-785627, NARC-56DAEE, and LANCUM-0B4EF0. These are largely…

The sherd has a rounded lip that is 2.94mm thick and c. 4.55mm long, and has a sub-oval profile. The sherd initially curves inwards, at which point there is a groove running around the exterior surface of the sherd. After this groove, the pot begins to curve outwards and tapers from 2.25mm thick to 1.63mm thick. The object has a largely brownish grey pati…

An incomplete, lead alloy weight, likely a spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (c. AD 43-1650). The object is sub-circular in plan and rectangular in cross section with a central aperture with a diameter of 6.67mm. The object has a pale cream patina. The obverse and reverse are both uneven, with irregular indentations and grooves. "The weight of the spindle whorl is suggestive of a thinner wool thread being spun, as there is a direct relationship between the weight of the whorl and the thickness of the resulting thread. Fine threads such as silk require a…

Both the obverse and the reverse are pitted, and there appears to potentially be the remnants of a design stamped on the reverse, though this is uncertain due to being extremely worn.
