The linch pin terminal is cast copper alloy. The external face is a circular 'disc' with rounded edges. The surface of this 'disc' has a sub-circular central hole, through which the iron pin is visible. The 'disc' is sub-circular due to a flattening of the edges on opposite edges. This flattening occurred in antquity as the patina covers these areas. Protruding from the reverse of this 'disc' there is an integral narrowed, circular sectioned cylinder which is most narrow in the centre. On the side of this cylinder there is a circular ?indentation or hole…

A Post Medieval iron object, possibly shot or a ball bearing. It weighs 3.57g, which is roughly 127 bore. This would mean that it could be a pellet from a shotgun, potentially from the 18th century or 19th century, or a ball bearing from the 19th century. There does not appear to be any signs of damage from being fired. The object is largely reddish brown in colour.

The socket is sub-triangular in shape with a rectangular-shaped butt. The axehead tapers slightly before widening to a flared crescentic blade. The axehead is heavily corroded and the very tips of the blade are now missing.  For a comparable example see PAS record LEIC-084A97. A cast iron Post Medieval possible cannon ball, probably dating to circa AD 1500 - 1700. The object is spherical in shape with pitting and corrosion visible on the surface. The cannon ball has a dark brown coloured patina across its surfaces. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail and full diameter and weight. The diameter and weight would suggest this example would fit a Minion cannon. The standard size for a Minion was a 3.5 inch bore and shot a 4 pound ball as discussed in Bailey (2000: p95…

An iron spoon likely post-Medieval in date. The spoon is covered in rust with some Verdigris patina over parts of it, suggesting that it was originally an iron spoon coated with a copper alloy. The spoon is bent in various places along the handle and the bowl, resulting in the bowl facing backwards and being relatively flat. There is a thin tear in the bowl around 9 o’clock in the current position it is in. There are letters stamped on the handle towards its end point, which appear to read “ON” or “NG”. The rest of the legend has been worn away. The…

Iron mule or horseshoe or iron fitting for the heel of a wooden clog or shoe sole. The shape of the shoe resembles 'tongue' type horseshoes, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries (see Bailey, 1997, page 41). Clark (2004) discusses mule shoes on page 78, and concludes that mules were rarely shod in the Medieval period and that the shoe would be narrow and long with a length to breadth ratio of 1.24:1, looking at modern mule shoes. This iron fitting is narrow and might therefore have been designed for a clog or shoe. Margeson (1993) illustrates a similar heel iron with the same dimens…

Three complete iron probable cannon balls dating to the Post Medieval period (c. AD 1500-1800). All three cannon balls are spherical in shape and show signs of corrosion. For a comparable example see PAS record SWYOR-D0681D. Here Downes also suggests that such balls could have been from an industrial process, such as a crushing mill. All objects measure approximately 50mm in diameter therefore if indeed they are cannon balls their size would suggest they were used in a falcon type cannon. The rectangular projection would have allowed the iron blade to be attached to a handle. The object is flat and the blade tapers from the shoulders, the tip is possibly broken.
