Copper alloy Victorian part of a British army belt closure. This consists of a circular plate with a rectangular bar attached on the back which has broken. The front of the circular plate has a lion above a crown. It would have been fitted (by a part now missing) to one end of a leather belt. It would have passed through a circular aperture on the other end of the belt to firmly lock the two ends together. The general style, and the shape of the crown, suggest that this is Victorian: perhaps 1860 - 1900.

The raised central band is plain, with a rouletted border, which has worn smooth in places. The two side bands are engraved with flowers and leaves, and would originally have been enamelled. The back of the hoop is decorated with diagonal bands of alternate plain and punched decoration to give the effect of cabling. Inside the hoop is the French inscription JOYE SANZ FYN (Joy without end) The hoop is not circular, but resembles a disten…

Fragment of a strap, probably from a Post-Medieval breast plate or other armour. Natasha Ferguson from the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology in Glasgow has seen a photograph of this item and says it is probably a 'strap from a piece of armour such as a breast plate which would have been worn in the civil war era'. It consists of two or three sub-rectangular strips of leather, laid on top of each other and held together by circular copper alloy rivets. Both ends and each side are uneven and they all seem to have been damaged/broken. This is only a small fragment of the com…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Warrington
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead weight, possibly Roman- Medieval in date. It is conical in shape with a slightly rounded pointed terminal. There is a hole in the base. The surface is uneven and there are some marks where it has been scratched by the plough. There is no sign of an attachment loop so it is unlikely to have been used as a steelyard weight. Weights of this shape and size were used over many periods and so it it difficult to date them more precisely when found out of context.

Lid from a Roman ceramic vessel, such as a jar. It is made from a creamy coloured fabric which is quite higly fired and seems to have no obvious inclusions. It is circular in plan with a slightly conical profile. It has a flat top. On the lower face there is a circular hollow in the centre. There are some chips missing from the lid, this could have happened in antiquity, in the ground or since it was discovered, it is not clear. Similar shaped lids can be seen in Gillams book, 'Types of Roman Coarse Pottery Vessels in Northern Britain', particularly no. 340 (1970;34). Th…
