Record ID: LVPL-D128DA
Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Warrington
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete lead weight probably dating to the medieval to post medieval period (c.AD 1400-1700).
The object has a sub-conical shape with central perforation that has an internal diameter of 2mm. The object has a light grey patina and has a rough and pitted surface.
Lead weights such as this are difficult to securely date because their use and style remains continuous from the Roman period onwards. Most weights such as this are found in medieval to post medieval dated contexts which explains this date given for this particular weight.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Warrington
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Complete case lead weight or loom weight of unclear date. Based on other weights found in the same immediate area, it is likely this object has a late medieval to post medieval date (1400-1600), although it is possible that it has an earlier or later date..
The object is a plain and flat ovoid with a small drilled perforation (1.5mm internal diameter) towards one end of the object. It is unclear what the object precisely functioned as but a weight is most likely, see DENO-7522D6 for a comparative example which suggests it may have functioned as a loom weight of a fishing net sinker.

A complete lead weight. The weight is circular in plan with a diameter of 55mm and is 14mm thick. One face has an "I" scored into it quite deeply, a symbol resembling a 'W' with detached centre is scored above that but more shallowly, and a radiate-type crown with four points above that, also shallowly scored. These may all be part of one symbol resembling a heavily stypised eye. The reverse has no visible decoration.
Biggs and Withers' catalogue of the David Rogers Collection (2000) lists many weights resembling this one, with Roman numerals of varying denominations, as Roman, due…

Cast lead weight, possibly Roman- Medieval in date.
It is conical in shape with a slightly rounded pointed terminal. There is a hole in the base. The surface is uneven and there are some marks where it has been scratched by the plough. There is no sign of an attachment loop so it is unlikely to have been used as a steelyard weight.
Weights of this shape and size were used over many periods and so it it difficult to date them more precisely when found out of context.
