Three fragments of Medieval ceramic vessels found in the same field, dating from AD 1100 - 1500. 1. Fragment of a base and side wall.  The fabric is hard and fine textured, buff coloured throughout, with grey sooting on the base. The gritty fabric has frequent, fairly well sorted, angular quartz inclusions which break the surface. It is probably a gritty ware. A ceramic vessel wall sherd of a splash glazed vessel dating from AD 1200-1500. The fabric is hard, irregular and gritty, grey in the core and orange on the surfaces. It has frequent poorly sorted quartz inclusions that break the surface giving the vessel a rough feel. There are splashes and runs of a pale green glaze on the outer face. A fragment of an undecorated ceramic vessel; an everted rim sherd from a vessel, probably of Roman grey ware dating from AD 43 - 410. The fabric is hard and fine to irregular. It is light grey throughout with frequent, well-sorted grey grit inclusions. The surviving part is the convex topped, horizontal everted rim, with a scar on the underside where the wall would have descended. It is 56.2mm long, 24.7mm wide and 11.2mm high. 20.8g.

The object is a body sherd of probably gritty ware.  The fabric is irregular, hard and gritty, with frequent poorly sorted angular quartz inclusions. The outer surfaces are orange in colour while the core is grey due to differential oxidisation. There are traces of a dark grey possibly glaze on the outer face. An incomplete Post Medieval clay tobacco pipe; an incomplete bowl, probably dating from AD 1750 - 1900. The fabric is pale cream coloured and is probably ballclay imported from the South West. The base of the bowl is missing, so it is uncertain whether it as spurred or not. The rim is cut leaving a flat top. The bowl is moulded with a fluted lower bowl, and relief scrolls on the upper half. A rim sherd from the rim of a ceramic vessel, probably of Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1500. The fabric is fine, hard and a pale orange in colour throughout. There are frequent rounded black inclusions (iron ore) and angular pale grey quartz inclusions, which break the surface giving the vessel a rough feel. The rim is everted and rounded, and has a rim diameter of about 120mm, estimated from about 10% of the rim. There are two splashes of clear glaze on the upper face of the rim. The sherd is 17.5mm long, 39.7mm wide and 15.5mm thick. It weighs 10.29g.

A ceramic "stilt", an item of kiln furniture dating from about AD 1750 - 1950. It is triangular in plan and one face is a pyramid with concave faces. The reverse has a circular hollow in the centre and a pointed leg or projection at each corner. It is made of cream coloured glazed ceramic, cracked in the hollow. It is 20.8mm long, 19.7mm wide and 12mm thick. 2.1g. The stilt would have been used to separate flatware in a kiln. Similar examples were discovered at Bretby, in a site dating from the late 19th-20th century (Maria Kneafsey pers. comm., October 2020). Compare also NLM-A06563.

A fragment of a clay tobacco pipe bowl dating from the late Post Medieval to Modern periods, about AD 1680 - 1910. The bowl is decorated in moulded relief with an acorn and oak leaves on the side. The rim is not parallel to the stem, suggeting a date before 1710, unless the pipe is in Dutch style which was copied by some English makers (Ayto, 2002). The fragment has a height of 34.88mm, a width of 24.25mm and a thickness of 10.13mm. It weighs 4.59g.

The fabric is hard and fine, oxidised to dark red, with dark grey to purple surfaces, perhaps an overfired glaze which is blistered and bubbly. The fine-grained matrix is light to medium grey in colour and contains very occasional dark grey or black inclusions. The outer surface is has a clear glaze. A rim sherd from a glazed ceramic vessel of Probable Post Medieval date. The fabric is hard and pale orange throughout with very few inclusions. There is a dark orange slip on the outer face and a shiny orange glaze on the inner face. The rim is simply rounded and has a wide band which is thickened on the outer face. The inner face curves gently from wall to rim. It was probably a large shallow dish. It is 88.8mm long, 56.9mm wide and 16.3mm thick. It weighs 73.38gm.
