RIC I, p. 112, no. 55. This is one of only two coins of this type which appear to have been found in Britain. The other was found in Oxfordshire: BERK-6C41FC.

Fragment of Roman amphora handle. Amphorae were sturdy pottery vessels which were used to transport and store foods such as olives, oil, and fish sauce. This handle fragment is flat, with two grooves running down the outside face. The fabric is pale buff in colour, with very few inclusions. The whole surface has been water-worn by the sea. Although it is difficult to tell from this worn fragment, it is possible that the amphora was of the Dressel 28 type (also known as Peacock and Williams Class 31). An incomplete Roman copper alloy developed T-shaped brooch dating to the period c. AD 50 - 150. The pin, most of the bow, the foot and the catchplate are missing. The brooch measures 22.84mm in length, 49.10mm maximum width, 8.43mm minimum width, is 18.17mm thick and weighs 19.50g. The brooch has wide wings, shallow C-shaped in cross-section and divided by a central pin slot. The pin slot exhibits small traces of iron corrosion product from the missing pin. The original denomination is unclear, however the coin has been counter-stamped with a date of 1652 and re-valued at 8 maravedis, evident by the '8' counter-stamp. A lead artefact, possibly a leather worker's palm guard dating from the Post-Medieval period, AD 1600 - 1900. It consists of a piece of sheet lead, of average thickness 8mm, shaped to fit a curved palm (roughly D-shaped). There is a shallow, transverse groove across the centre of the artefact on the inner side of the curve, though it is difficult to determine whether this original or damage subsequent to its deposition in the soil. The artefact has a patchy, cream and light grey patina. It is 70.6mm long, 53.9mm wide and 8mm thick. It weighs 228gm. Compare SWYOR-0E65DB.
