A cast lead alloy circular ball (similar in size and shape to a musket ball) of probable post medieval 1600-1800 date. The ball has a square shaped hole through its mid point (4.0mm x 4.6mm) and has no sign of decoration, casting seam or casting spur. It is a light grey colour with a relatively thick surface patina. It is highly unlikely that the ball is from shot and instead is suggested to be from a line or net weight. The ball measures: 16.4mm in diameter, 15.4mm high and weighs 19.19 grams

A cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable late Medieval or Post Medieval date (1250 - 1700). The weight is irregular in plan being broadly oval in shape with a wedge like cross section. Both faces are not decorated. The centre of the weight is pierced, the hole is 'hour-glass' shaped having been drilled or incised from both front and rear faces; the hole has a diameter of 3.8mm. The weight is a mid grey colour with a relatively even and corroded patina that covers all surfaces. A light active powdery corrosion product is present on all surfaces. A direct parallel for this weight ha…

Cast lead or lead alloy pan weight of probable late Medieval or Post Medieval date (1250 - 1700). The weight is circular in plan and rectangular shaped in cross section. Both faces are not decorated although it maybe possible that the upper surface has a compass cut incised line which runs around the circumferential edge. The weight is a mid grey colour with a relatively even and corroded patina that covers all surfaces. A light active powdery corrosion product is present on all surfaces. The surface of the weight is distorted by a slight fold from movement in the plough soil. A direc…

A cast lead or lead alloy weight of Roman to Post Medieval date (c. AD 1 - 1650). The weight is broadly oval in plan and sub-triangular (conical) in cross section, although the edges are irregular. The central hole is broadly circular and has been cast / set slightly off centre; at the bottom of the weight the hole has been squashed and is an elongated oval shape. The diameter of the hole measures 2.9mm at the apex. Cast copper alloy weight of probable post-medieval date (1550-1800). The weight is part of a larger group of stacking weights, having a wide and relatively thick raised edge on the upper face. The front and rear faces both have turned circles around a central hollow point; all of these concentric circles are regular and well formed. The front face is further marked with a series of stamps: these consist of two small circles and a poorly defined coffee pot / ewer mark of the Worshipful Company of Founders. Unusually the monarchs initials are not applied - possibly suggesting it is a la…

A complete copper alloy (brass/leaded bronze) apothecaries weight of post-medieval dating from the 17th century onwards. The weight is square in plan and rectangular in section and is engraved on both sides with the traditional symbol for the apothecary's unit of measure 2 drachms. The symbol can be described in its basic form as 3y with two dots over the y. The weight has a well preserved dark green patina. Similar apothecaries weights can be seen in (Biggs 1992: p8) that he suggests were made by stamping square pieces of brass. Older brass weights were often also stamped with a rose…

A copper-alloy apothecary weight, of probable Post-Medieval to modern date. The weight is square in plan and rectangular in cross section. The obverse face depicts the letters 'Z and R'. The R has a pellet at the end of each foot. The reverse face is stamped with a single 'R' which also has the pellets at each foot. The surface is fairly abraded so it is possible that other stamped letters are no longer visible. The weight has a dark green to brown patina. The earliest copper-alloy apothecary weights were made from square pieces of copper-alloy, stamped with traditional symbols for th…

A copper alloy weight of post-medieval date circa (1603-1625). The weight is probably part of a larger group of stacking weights, due to it having a wide and relatively thick raised edge on the upper face. The front face is marked with a series of stamps: these include a crowned I, the dagger or sword of the London Guildhall, and the ewer (coffee pot) of the Worshipful Company of Founders. The crowned I dates this weight to the reign of James I (1603-1625). At the centre of the front face the weight has a circular indentation which is where the maker would have shaved the weight to…

A possible cast lead weight dating from Medieval to Post Medieval (AD 410-1800). The weight is sub circular in plan with rounded edges with one edge being slightly tapered to a rounded point. The upper face contains a cast design in relief of a probable stylised sun. The design incorporates a central raised pellet with seven curved ribs emanating outwards towards the edges. The radial spokes possibly representing the sun's rays are irregular in shape. Above the central relief design is a single raised pellet which is off centre towards the edge of the weight where it tapers. The re…

Cast lead alloy weight of unknown date probably later medieval or modern - 1300-1800 AD. The weight is sub-circular in plan and D shaped in profile; in cross section it is an irregular rectangle. Through the centre is a sub-circular hole (6.8mm internal diameter). There is no sign of decoration and the weight is a mid grey colour with an even, but powdery corrosion. Similar weights have been dated to both the Roman and the medieval periods however it is most likely that this is of medieval date, probably for use as a net or line weight. The weight measures 16.7mm diameter, 8.8mm …
