Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Telford and Wrekin
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete ground and polished axehead formed of a very fine grained siliceous stone / banded flint of probable Neolithic date (3000-2000 BC). The axe is knapped from a flint which has banded colours which range from a bale cream buff through to a deep chocolate brown. There are areas of mid orange staining across the body and this is possibly as a result in the burial environment - possibly indicating deposition within soils that are iron rich or have a predilection towards iron panning / waterlogging. The matrix of the stone is smooth although areas of highly polished mid grey white…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint thumbnail (horseshoe) scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC).It is broadly rectangular in plan and an irregular oval in cross section. The scraper is formed from a dark grey coloured piece of primary debitage. The dorsal surface is covered approximately 90% by cortex. The retouch around the curved edges of the scraper extend to around three quarters of the flint. The retouch is short, parallel and abrupt. This type of scraper is the most common type of tool found within flint assemblages of later Neolithic or early Bronze Age (Beaker) date, being a …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A retouched blade formed on secondary debitage (from the second phase of tool making) of later Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC). The blade is struck from a poor quality flint core that varies in coarseness and colour, most probably being glacial or riverine derived. A larger area of cortex is present along one edge, this is a coarse white colour. The ventral face shows a clear bulb of percussion and conchoidal ripples and the upper edge has a distinct prepared knapping platform. The dorsal face shows a number of long scars formed from blade removals. The long edge has also been rework…

A broken flint blade of later Mesolithic date (4000 -3000 BC). The blade is rectangular in plan and has a crested cross section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are lost - the upper part of the blade being snapped. Both long edges have been reworked with abrupt direct percussion retouch which has created a crude cutting and scraping edge. This retouch has been applied on both the dorsal edge; and the ventral face shows signs of more recent damage through plough roll. The tip has also been reworked on the dorsal face with a number of lateral flakes that have created a ps…

A knapped flint scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2900-1800 BC). The scraper is broadly oval in plan and irregular (broadly lentoid) in cross section being formed from a tertiary debitage flake. The upper / dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a series of irregular flake scars suggesting that this piece has been removed from a larger flake and been subsequently reused. These flake scars show knapping in several directions. The lower / ventral face has a series of conchoidal ripples; the bulb of percussion and striking platform are removed and the flake has been thinn…

An exceptionally large but broken flint blade of possible late Paleolithic or more probable early Mesolithic date (12000 -6500 BC). The blade is broadly sub-rectangular in shape and lentoid (crested) in cross section. The prepared striking platform and bulb of percussion are both present. The dorsal face shows a number of vertical flake scars (ridges / crests) formed by the removal of other flakes from a large core prior to the creation of this blade - all these removals have been caused by blades being taken in a similar direction. There is no evidence of retouch. The long edges o…

Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (2900 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly oval in both plan and D shaped in cross section. It has number of regular facets created by flaking on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. The lower (ventral) face has very little evidence of flaking. It does however show evidence of the striking platform, bulb of percussion and conchoidal fractures. There is a small area of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on the dorsal face. Also there is a small hole / depression on one face where originally…

A heavily burnt gun flint of post medieval - modern date (1650-1850 AD). The flint is sub-square in plan and trapezoidal in profile and section. The flint is a light white (plastic) colour with a crazed mid grey surface patina. The dorsal face has been knapped / worked on all four sides; this work consists of creating sloping edges to give it a trapezoidal side view. The ventral face retains the waves emanating outwards from the point of impact, but the bulb of percussion has been removed. At the mid point, visible on both the dorsal and ventral faces, a distinct notch is present. Thi…

Flint debitage from the final / tertiary phase of knapping dating from the later Neolithic 2900-2100 BC. The piece of debitage has been reworked into a small irregular discoidal scraper. Both the dorsal and ventral faces exhibit a number of flake scars in several different directions. One edge has been extensively reworked with neat regular flakes being removed to create a serrated scraping edge. The end has similar reworking present – possibly suggesting a chisel like edge. The flint is a mid grey colour; there is some evidence of damage through abrasion in the ploughsoil and the ed…

Flake of flint debitage (waste product from tool production) of probable later Neolithic date (2900 - 2100 BC). The debitage is from the secondary phase of tool production as one face has a relatively large area of cortex (outer rind of flint nodule) present suggesting that it is derived from nodules bedded in chalk. The flake is irregular in plan and also profile. The dorsal (upper) face has a series of relatively regular flake facet scars present whilst the ventral (lower) face shows a clear bulb of percussion and conchoidal ripples. These are in the same plane to the flake scars on …

Small irregular flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and D shaped in cross section. It has number of regular facets (caused by flaking) on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. There are also a number of hinge fractures caused by flaws within the flint matrix. There is no evidence of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on either face. This suggests that this flake comes from the tertiary phase of tool production. Six irregular flint cores used for the production of blades of later Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). All of the cores are irregular in plan and profile. Only two of the six are true (classic) cores being broadly sub-rectangular or sub-triangular in plan with a series of neat compact scars. Many of the cores have multiple striking platforms which are neatly trimmed and dressed. A number of the cores are formed from river / beach pebbles of flint and have large amounts of cortex on at least one face. These cores tend to have a large number of hinge-fractures and flaws in them suggesti…

Irregular shaped flint blade / core rejuvenation flake of probable late Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). The flake is sub-rectangular in plan and broadly sub-triangular in cross section. The bulb of percussion is present on the reverse and there is also no evidence of cortex on any part of the blade; this suggests that the flake was produced during the later life of the core once this material has been removed. There also no evidence of detailed retouch / reworking. It is most likely that this flake / blade has been struck from a relatively well developed core which has produced an o…

Thirty-Two fragments of primary flint waste as well as natural flint and chert pebbles. The majority of this material has not been worked and which has has been produced in the primary phase of working. The majority of this material is river washed or beach pebble. Although no real artefacts are present – this collection of natural unworked flint comes from the discreet flint scatter discussed in other records from the same area. The collection of this material with artefacts from the later Mesolithic and the Early Neolithic might hint at the source of flint being used. Flint is not …

Two snapped blades of probable late Mesolithic date (6500BC - 3500BC). Both consist of the upper parts of the blade and exhibit bulbs of percussion. There is no evidence of any significant reworking on any of the blades. Both have evidence of cortex on the blade; this suggests that the flakes were produced during the earlier life of the core before all this material had been removed. The flint is a light grey white colour and has been slightly abraded in the ploughsoil. The source of flint is difficult to ascertain; much of the local flint is procured from glacial and riverine sources.…
