A cast lead or lead alloy weight of probable late Medieval or Post Medieval date (1250 - 1700). The weight is irregular in plan being broadly oval in shape with a D shaped cross section. Neither face or sides are decorated. The centre of the weight is pierced, the hole is oval shaped with a maximum diameter of 11.2mm. The weight is a mid grey colour with a relatively even and corroded patina that covers all surfaces. A light active powdery corrosion product is present on all surfaces. A direct parallel for this weight has not been found; it is more likely to be a suspended weight for …

An incomplete fragmnet from a heavily abraded and eroded cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD), most probably Medieval (AD1200 -1600). The spindle whorl fragment is heavily distorted through movement - originally it would have been broadly circular in plan and bi-convex in cross section; it is now C shaped and the two broken edges are heavily eroded. Both faces of the whorl are decorated - but the design is lost. The spindle whorl has a cream - mid-grey coloured surface patina. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such a…

A heavily abraded and eroded cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl or weight of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD), most probably Medieval (AD1200 -1600). The spindle whorl is broadly circular in plan and bi-convex in cross section; it has been heavily eroded in the soil. The central hole is irregular and has been cast / set off centre; it has an internal diameter of 9.0mm. The hole of this whorl is choked with fired white clay and as such should be considered to be unfinished or an example of waste from the casting / production process. As such its survival is highly unusual a…
