A cast copper alloy knife end cap/terminal/pommel from a scale tang knife, dating to the late Medieval or early Post-Medieval period (15th to 16th centuries AD).
The object is corroded but near complete. The design is irregular- a flattened oval sectioned base (which would have attached to the handle) bifurcated into two near symmetrical knops. Each knop is sub-rectangular in section and tapers slightly to flat ends. The outside edge of each end is upturned and projects outwards. Both ends are also decorated by four circular holes with square sectioned copper alloy rods inserted…

The sides are straight and divergent towards the apex (giving the terminal a maximum width of 17.4mm). The faces are convex across their widths and are slightly thicker at the base (with a maximum thickness of 6.8mm). The faces are decorated prominent incised cro…

The fitting is complete (with a length of 10.6mm, a thickness of 6.1mm and a weight of 4.6g). The underside has a V-shaped groove to accommodate the top of the knife tang (2.8mm deep). The fitting is of bifid form, with a curving arm projecting from each side (giving a width of 19.1mm) and thinning to the terminals. The terminals are enhanced with grooves. The base of the fitting also has decorative grooves near the base. The knife fitting is unpatinated with a golden-bronze su…

A late medieval to post-medieval copper-alloy knife handle, probably of 16th-century date or slightly earlier. The knife is of scale-tang type, with two copper-alloy scale plates riveted to the integral iron tang. The iron blade of the knife has broken towards its start. No shoulder plate is present between the tang and blade. The handle was attached by three copper-alloy rivets spaced equally along its median length. The handle was decorated with floral mouldings, although little of the design survives. The end cap is expanded, flaring out compared to the scale plates, and is decorat…
